The confusing part of a Korean study cafe is often not getting in. It is knowing whether a lunch break keeps the clock running, whether your laptop belongs in that room, and whether walking out actually ends your session.
A 스터디카페 (study cafe) sells access to study space rather than simply a drink. For a first visit, choose a short pass only after checking the seat rules, payment route, and checkout procedure. A discounted bundle is not much use if you cannot enter the branch or use your laptop there.
Operator information checked: September 23, 2026. The branch examples below illustrate different systems; they are not nationwide rules or guarantees of foreign-card acceptance. Confirm the current notice at the branch you intend to use.
Before you pay: check the branch, seat, and access method
Search the exact branch name, not just the chain. Match the address and floor to the sign outside, then check the operator's latest notices. If a map listing links to an app or booking page, make sure it is for that location.
Ask these questions before buying:
- Can I register with my phone setup? Explain whether you have a Korean number, can receive texts, and can complete Korean mobile identity verification. These are separate capabilities.
- Can I pay with my card? Specify an overseas-issued card if that is what you have. A card logo or an English interface does not establish that your transaction will work.
- Is there a suitable seat? Ask about typing, calls, video meetings, age restrictions, and any access needs.
- When does the pass start and expire? Buying, reserving, and checking in may be different actions.
- Who answers if the door or kiosk fails? Save the branch contact before paying, especially for a late-night visit.
Some systems support remote actions. ZeroEyes, for example, advertises seat checking, payment, and app-based check-in/out. That is a feature of participating locations using its system, not a reason to download the same app for every cafe. Source: ZeroEyes study-cafe service overview.
If the branch specifically sends you to Naver, our Naver Booking guide for foreigners covers that separate registration and payment process. Finding a place on Naver does not itself create a study-cafe membership.
Choose a pass you will actually use
The labels below are useful clues, but read the terms beside the product. In particular, 시간권 can be used for different time-based products; the name alone does not tell you whether unused hours carry over.
- 당일권 / 1회권 — day or single-visit pass: check the session length, re-entry rules, and what happens to unused time at checkout. “Day pass” need not mean 24 hours.
- 시간패키지 / 충전권 — prepaid hour bundle: check the expiry date, how time is deducted, and how to preserve the remaining balance.
- 기간권 — date-based pass: check its start date, allowed hours, daily limits, and seat availability. It is not automatically a reserved desk.
- 고정석 / 지정석 — fixed or assigned seat: confirm exactly which seat is reserved and whether storage is included. A locker, 사물함, may be a separate purchase.
A concrete price example: Alltop's Opo Gosan branch in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, lists a two-hour day ticket at ₩4,000 and a ten-hour bundle at ₩25,000 with a 15-day validity period. It also says day-ticket time disappears at checkout. These are this branch's posted terms, not average Korean prices. Source: Alltop Opo Gosan pricing and use guide.
Compare the price with the hours you realistically expect to use before expiry, not just the hours printed on the package. For an unfamiliar branch, a short first session lets you check the chair, lighting, temperature, Wi-Fi, and noise rules before committing.
At the kiosk: registration, payment, and entry
Screen order varies, so use this as a checklist rather than a button-by-button promise.
- Register or sign in. Look for 회원가입 or 로그인. Use your own details. If verification is required and you cannot complete it, contact the manager before purchasing.
- Select the correct product and date. Read the expiry, start time, cancellation terms, and whether the displayed fee is per seat or per room.
- Confirm the seat. Use the seat-map legend. An apparently empty chair may belong to a reservation or someone temporarily outside.
- Complete payment once. Wait for a confirmed purchase or ticket. Keep the receipt or transaction record.
- Check that entry is active. Find the assigned seat, remaining time, and access credential. A receipt alone may not be your door pass.
Before settling in, identify 좌석 변경 (change seat), 연장 (extend), and 퇴실 (check out). Do not test the checkout button just to see what it does. It may end a single-use ticket.
If the kiosk is only in Korean, a translation tool can help with ordinary menu text. Avoid sending screenshots containing your access code, phone number, or payment information to a translation service. Ask the operator about any term that changes payment or remaining time.
Pick a seat for the work you plan to do
A desk with a power socket is not proof that keyboard use is allowed. Alltop Opo Gosan, for example, prohibits laptop typing in its Focus Zone but permits laptop work in its Multi Zone; its terrace is designated for calls. Source: the branch's space guide.
For your own branch, confirm the difference between a quiet area, laptop area, lounge, and bookable study room. Permission to type does not automatically include permission to speak. For an interview or video meeting, ask specifically about spoken conversation and sound isolation.
Choose and change seats through the system when required. If someone is using your assigned desk, contact the manager rather than moving their belongings. Keep calls, food, and conversations in the areas the branch permits; headphones do not make a spoken meeting silent.
For a longer session, bring a charger and a light layer. Check whether drinks, printing, and lockers cost extra. Do not assume a chain's facilities or perks are identical at every branch.
Leaving for lunch: “out” and “finished” are different
Three words matter here:
- 외출: temporary absence. Ask whether time keeps running and how long the seat is held.
- 재입실: re-entry. Check how to get back in with your current pass.
- 퇴실: ending the session. Ask what happens to unused time before pressing it.
There is no universal lunch-break allowance. ZeroEyes explicitly lets operators configure permitted absence times for different pass types. A button named “temporary exit” therefore does not prove that time is paused. Source: ZeroEyes pass-absence management.
One branch's contrasting rules: Haus Study Seoul Yangjae's official notice says a single-use ticket loses remaining time at checkout, whereas its hour package requires kiosk “smart checkout” to credit unused allocated time back. It also says that the hour package has no separate temporary-exit function. Missing checkout can mean losing time. Source: Haus Study Seoul Yangjae's official channel.
The practical question is not simply “Can I go out?” Ask: “With this pass, which button should I use for a 30-minute break, will time continue to deduct, and will my seat remain mine?” Take valuables with you, and do not leave belongings to claim a seat after ending a session.
Check out before you leave for the day
- Pack up and clear the desk. Return anything borrowed from the branch.
- Use the branch's required kiosk or app checkout procedure.
- Read the confirmation. Check that the session has ended and, for a reusable hour bundle, that the remaining balance is plausible.
- Keep the confirmation if anything looks wrong, then leave using the normal exit route.
Opening the door is not evidence that billing has stopped. Likewise, closing the app is not checkout. If the system requires a kiosk action, an app's remote-checkout feature advertised elsewhere is not a substitute.
If your session will run past midnight, ask how the date rollover works. A venue can be open all night while a specific pass or seat registration has an earlier cutoff. Check the session end time rather than relying on a “24 hours” sign.
What to do when something fails
No Korean number, no text message, or failed identity verification
Tell the manager exactly which step failed and ask whether the branch offers a supported alternative. Do not enter a stranger's number or borrow another person's account. If you cannot register, confirm access before transferring money.
If you are a resident whose phone should support verification, our resident SIM and identity-verification guide explains what to check with the carrier. Receiving ordinary messages and passing a Korean identity check are not the same thing.
Your card is declined, or charged without a pass appearing
For a decline, ask which other payment methods the branch actually accepts. Do not assume cash works at an unattended kiosk. For an apparent charge without a ticket, check the purchase history and contact the operator before paying again. Provide the time, amount, branch, and a redacted receipt—not your full card number or security code.
You paid, but the door will not open
Check the branch, reservation date, start time, and active pass. Use the displayed manager contact or help function. Do not follow another customer through the door or force it. Ask the operator to document the failed entry and clarify how the unused session will be handled.
You forgot to check out
Use remote checkout only if your branch supports it. Otherwise contact the manager immediately with your seat number, approximate departure time, and pass type. Ask for the session record and a review of the deduction. Do not assume time will be restored automatically.
You need to cancel a longer pass
Send the request in writing and keep the purchase terms, payment record, usage history, and response. Ask for an itemized refund calculation. Do not assume either that every unused hour must be refunded or that a “no refunds” message settles the issue.
The Korea Consumer Agency has specifically warned about study-cafe kiosk purchases where important expiry and refund terms were not clearly explained. Its 2021 warning is useful background, not a current refund formula for every contract. For a disputed charge or refusal, seek case-specific guidance through 1372 or the official online consultation route. Source: KCA study-cafe warning; current consultation methods.

For a first visit, the useful test is simple: can you register, pay, enter, use the right seat, and finish the session without help? Once those steps work, you can judge whether a larger pass makes sense for your routine.
