Coupang Before Your ARC: A First-Week Shopping Guide

You have just arrived in South Korea, opened the door to your new studio apartment, and discovered that it is completely empty. There is no toilet paper, dish soap, bedding, towel, trash bag, or bottled water.

You download Coupang because everyone has told you about Rocket Delivery (로켓배송). You add the essentials to your cart, enter your Korean address, and move to checkout.

Then Coupang asks for identity verification, known in Korean as 본인인증.

You have a passport and perhaps a Korean prepaid phone number, but your Residence Card has not arrived yet. This creates one of the most frustrating problems for newly arrived foreigners in Korea: you can receive calls and text messages, but you may still be unable to complete Korean mobile identity verification.

The important answer is that there is no dependable passport-only shortcut that automatically unlocks Coupang. A passport-based prepaid SIM can help you communicate, but it may not be connected to the foreign resident database required for full identity verification.

That does not mean you need to spend several weeks carrying large packs of water and toilet paper from a supermarket. You simply need a different first-week shopping plan.

Can You Use Coupang Before Your ARC Arrives? The Real First-Week Shopping Plan in Korea

Short Answer First

  • A passport-based prepaid SIM is useful for calls, texts, and data. However, receiving an SMS code does not necessarily mean the number supports Korean identity verification.
  • A Korean bank account does not automatically unlock Coupang. Coupang may require identity verification before allowing the first purchase, regardless of whether a virtual-account payment option is available.
  • Opening a bank account with a passport may be possible. However, mobile banking, debit cards, online transfers, and transaction limits depend on the bank, branch, visa status, and documents available.
  • The most practical pre-ARC alternative is usually Gmarket Global. It supports foreign-issued cards and PayPal, although delivery is generally not as fast or consistent as Coupang Rocket Delivery.
  • Once your Residence Card arrives, update your phone registration first. After the telecom company connects your number to your foreign resident information, Korean app verification becomes much easier.

What Is Really Happening?

In Korea, having a Korean phone number and having a phone number that supports 본인인증 are not necessarily the same thing.

A tourist SIM or passport-based prepaid SIM may provide:

  • A Korean phone number
  • Incoming and outgoing calls
  • SMS reception
  • Mobile data

However, many Korean apps do more than send a simple verification code. They compare the information you enter with the subscriber information held by the telecom company and the identity information recognized by the verification provider.

The following details may need to match:

  • Your legal name
  • Your foreign resident registration number
  • Your date of birth
  • Your nationality
  • Your mobile carrier
  • Your Korean phone number

If your phone was activated using only a passport, the line may not yet contain the foreign resident registration information needed for full mobile identity verification.

This is why a person can receive Coupang’s text messages but still fail the identity-check screen.

Why Newly Arrived Foreigners Get Confused

1. SMS Verification and Identity Verification Are Different

An SMS verification code usually proves that you currently possess the phone. Korean identity verification checks whether the subscriber’s registered identity matches the identity entered in the app.

A data-and-voice SIM may therefore receive text messages while still failing 휴대폰 본인확인, meaning mobile identity verification.

2. The Physical Card Is Not the Only Issue

The card commonly called an ARC is now generally referred to as a Residence Card. The important part is not only possessing the plastic card. Your foreign resident information also needs to be available and correctly connected to your telecom subscription.

An immigration application receipt may help prove that your Residence Card application is being processed, but it does not necessarily replace registered identity information in a telecom verification system.

3. A Korean Bank Account Does Not Replace Telecom Verification

Some banks may open a limited account using a passport and additional supporting documents. However, this does not mean the account can immediately be connected to Coupang Pay, mobile banking, automatic transfers, or every Korean online service.

A bank may separately restrict:

  • Mobile and internet banking
  • Daily transfer amounts
  • Debit-card issuance
  • Overseas remittance
  • Automatic payments
  • Account verification through other apps

Requirements may vary by bank and branch. Ask specifically what you can do with the account before leaving the bank.

4. Virtual-Account Payment Does Not Necessarily Bypass Account Verification

무통장입금 is normally translated as virtual-account payment or bank transfer without a bankbook. When available, the shopping platform creates a temporary account number for the order, and the customer transfers the exact amount.

The payment itself may not require card verification. However, Coupang can still require account or identity verification before allowing the order to reach that stage.

In addition, the virtual-account option may not appear for every customer, product, membership, or order. It should be treated as a payment method, not as a guaranteed solution to the pre-ARC identity problem.

The Best 8282 Plan for Your First Week

Option 1: Use Gmarket Global for Online Orders

For many newly arrived foreigners, Gmarket Global is the most realistic online alternative while waiting for Korean identity verification.

Gmarket Global officially supports several payment methods that are easier for international customers, including:

  • Foreign-issued Visa cards
  • Foreign-issued Mastercard
  • Other supported international card networks
  • PayPal
  • Bank transfer when available

Products marked for domestic delivery can be delivered to a Korean address, but each seller controls shipping availability, delivery fees, processing time, and return conditions.

Before paying, check:

  • Whether the item supports delivery within South Korea
  • The seller’s estimated dispatch date
  • The domestic shipping charge
  • The full Korean address and postal code
  • Whether the seller requires a Korean contact number
  • The cancellation and return conditions

Gmarket Global is particularly useful for bedding, towels, kitchen supplies, toiletries, storage items, small appliances, and other non-urgent household products.

You can review the current options through the Gmarket Global website and its official payment-method guide.

Option 2: Buy Only the First 48 Hours of Essentials Offline

Do not try to furnish your entire apartment during one supermarket visit. Buy only what you need for the first one or two days.

A practical emergency list is:

  • One roll or small pack of toilet paper
  • One towel
  • Trash bags appropriate for your district
  • Dish soap and a sponge
  • Drinking water
  • Simple food for one or two meals
  • Basic bedding or an inexpensive pillow
  • Shampoo, soap, and toothpaste
  • Phone charger or plug adapter if required

Common places to check include Daiso, convenience stores, local supermarkets, No Brand, Emart, Homeplus, and Lotte Mart. Store locations, inventory, delivery services, and payment acceptance vary.

For heavy items such as bottled water, ask a nearby supermarket whether it provides local delivery.

You can say:

배달해 주시나요?
Bae-dal-hae ju-si-na-yo?
“Do you offer delivery?”

Some neighborhood supermarkets still provide local delivery after an in-store purchase, but the service area, minimum amount, payment method, and delivery time depend on the store.

Option 3: Ask a Trusted Person to Place the Order From Their Own Account

If you have a trusted coworker, university coordinator, relocation manager, friend, or family member in Korea, they may be able to place an order using their own account and payment method and send it to your address.

This is different from borrowing their identity information.

The safe arrangement is:

  • The other person logs into their own account.
  • They place and pay for the order as the purchaser.
  • Your apartment is entered only as the delivery address.
  • You reimburse them through an agreed method.

Do not enter another person’s Residence Card number, phone subscriber information, bank details, or identity-verification data into an account presented as your own.

Option 4: Ask Your Employer, School, or Accommodation Provider

Many universities, language schools, multinational employers, relocation agencies, hotels, serviced residences, and dormitories regularly assist newly arrived foreigners.

They may be able to help with:

  • Receiving packages before you understand the building system
  • Explaining the correct Korean address format
  • Finding a nearby supermarket that offers delivery
  • Buying a starter household package
  • Contacting a delivery driver
  • Confirming your building entrance instructions

Ask before ordering, especially if the accommodation has a front desk, mailroom, locked parcel area, or restrictions on overnight deliveries.

Should You Get a Passport-Based Prepaid SIM?

Yes. A prepaid SIM is still one of the first things you should arrange after arriving in Korea.

It can help you:

  • Receive calls from immigration, a landlord, employer, or delivery driver
  • Use maps and translation apps
  • Receive ordinary SMS messages
  • Contact banks and service providers
  • Use apps that require only a reachable Korean number

However, do not purchase the SIM based only on the promise that it has a Korean number. Ask whether it supports mobile identity verification for a foreigner without a Residence Card.

Use this exact question:

여권으로 개통한 선불폰인데 휴대폰 본인확인이 가능한가요?
Yeo-gwon-eu-ro gae-tong-han seon-bul-pon-in-de hyu-dae-pon bon-in-hwak-in-i ga-neung-han-ga-yo?
“This is a prepaid phone activated with my passport. Can it be used for mobile identity verification?”

Do not ask only:

문자 받을 수 있어요?
Mun-ja ba-deul su i-sseo-yo?
“Can it receive text messages?”

Receiving messages and supporting identity verification are two different functions.

KT, for example, officially states that passport-only customers may be limited to prepaid service. Check the current conditions through the KT Global required-document guide. Other carriers and MVNO providers may apply different requirements.

Should You Open a Bank Account Before Your Residence Card Arrives?

You may try, especially if you will be studying or working in Korea long term. A passport can be accepted as identification for certain banking transactions, but account opening is not guaranteed.

Bring as much supporting evidence as possible:

  • Your original passport
  • Your valid visa or visa-related documentation
  • Your Korean housing contract
  • Your Korean address
  • Your Korean phone number
  • Your employment contract or school enrollment document
  • Your Residence Card application receipt, if available
  • Documents explaining why you need the account

Bank staff may ask about the purpose of the account because Korean banks must follow real-name verification and financial-crime prevention requirements.

Instead of asking only whether an account can be opened, ask about each required function.

여권으로 계좌 개설과 모바일뱅킹까지 가능한가요?
Yeo-gwon-eu-ro gye-jwa gae-seol-gwa mo-ba-il-baeng-king-kka-ji ga-neung-han-ga-yo?
“Can I open an account and use mobile banking with my passport?”

Also confirm:

  • Can I make transfers through the banking app?
  • Will I receive a debit card?
  • What is the daily transfer limit?
  • Can I receive salary payments?
  • Can I use the account for automatic payments?
  • What must I update after receiving my Residence Card?

Woori Bank’s foreign-customer guidance recognizes a passport or Residence Card as identification in certain circumstances, but requirements for smartphone banking and related services may be different. Review the Woori Bank foreign-customer banking guide and confirm your specific case with the branch.

What to Do When Your Residence Card Arrives

Once your Residence Card is issued, fix your mobile registration before repeatedly retrying verification in Korean apps.

  1. Visit your mobile carrier or MVNO service center.
Bring your passport, Residence Card, phone, and SIM information.
  2. Ask the carrier to replace the passport-based subscriber information with your Residence Card information.
Whether the existing number can be retained depends on the carrier and plan.
  3. Confirm the exact registered name format.
Ask the employee to write it down exactly as stored, including spaces and hyphens.
  4. Test mobile identity verification.
Do not assume that an updated phone number is working until you successfully complete a verification attempt.
  5. Complete or retry your Coupang account verification.
Enter the same name and information registered with the carrier.
  6. Add your Korean payment method.
Available cards, bank accounts, Coupang Pay functions, and virtual-account options may depend on your account and current app settings.

Use this phrase at the mobile shop:

외국인등록증이 나왔는데 현재 번호의 신분증 정보를 변경하고 싶어요.
Oe-guk-in-deung-nok-jeung-i na-wat-neun-de hyeon-jae beon-ho-ui sin-bun-jeung jeong-bo-reul byeon-gyeong-ha-go si-peo-yo.
“My Residence Card has been issued, and I would like to update the ID information for my current phone number.”

The Foreign-Name Matching Problem

Name mismatches are one of the most common reasons foreign residents fail Korean identity verification even after receiving a Residence Card.

Your name can appear in several different forms:

  • JOHN MICHAEL DOE
  • DOE JOHN MICHAEL
  • JOHNMICHAELDOE
  • DOEJOHNMICHAEL
  • JOHN M DOE

Do not randomly try every possible combination. First ask the telecom provider how your name is stored in its subscriber system.

Then use the exact same format when completing identity verification.

Check:

  • Family-name and given-name order
  • Spaces between names
  • Hyphens
  • Middle names
  • Capitalization
  • Whether the app has a character-length limit

The Seoul Metropolitan Government’s official living guide also advises foreign residents to use their name exactly as written on their Residence Card when registering for Korean online shopping services.

Setting Up the Delivery Address Correctly

A successful payment does not guarantee a successful delivery. Korean apartment and studio addresses can include several separate details.

Check that you have:

  • The five-digit postal code
  • The road-name address, called 도로명주소
  • The building name
  • The building or tower number, called
  • The apartment or unit number, called
  • A reachable Korean phone number
  • Delivery instructions

If the building has a locked communal entrance, the app may provide a delivery-instruction field for the entrance method.

Useful delivery instructions include:

문 앞에 놓아주세요.
Mun ap-e no-a-ju-se-yo.
“Please leave it in front of the door.”

도착하면 전화해주세요.
Do-chak-ha-myeon jeon-hwa-hae ju-se-yo.
“Please call me when you arrive.”

공동현관 출입 방법은 배송 메모에 적었습니다.
Gong-dong-hyeon-gwan chu-rip bang-beop-eun bae-song me-mo-e jeok-eot-seum-ni-da.
“I wrote the communal entrance instructions in the delivery note.”

Do not place sensitive entrance information in a publicly visible part of the address. Use the service’s designated delivery-instruction field when available.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Buying a Data-Only Tourist SIM

A data-only SIM may not provide a Korean voice number or SMS function. It will not solve an identity-verification problem.

Assuming Every Prepaid SIM Supports 본인인증

A prepaid line may be registered to your passport for telecom-service purposes while still being unsupported by Korean mobile identity-verification systems.

Opening a Bank Account Without Checking Its Restrictions

A basic account may exist while mobile transfers, online payments, cards, and automatic payments remain restricted.

Using Another Person’s Residence Card Number

Do not use a borrowed, purchased, fabricated, or randomly generated identity number. It can violate the law, the platform’s terms, and financial or telecom regulations.

Repeatedly Changing Your Name Format

Multiple failed attempts can make troubleshooting harder. Confirm the carrier’s registered spelling before retrying.

Depending on an Old Free-Shipping Threshold

Coupang’s shipping conditions, membership benefits, minimum order amounts, and discount calculations can change. Check the actual shipping charge and final qualifying amount shown at checkout.

Assuming Coupang Wow Will Be Available Immediately

Wow membership uses recurring billing and may require an eligible domestic payment method or additional verification. Do not build your first-week plan around successful membership registration.

Final 8282 Action

Do not spend your first week repeatedly attempting a passport-based Coupang workaround that may never pass the identity check.

Use this order instead:

  1. Purchase a small emergency supply offline.
  2. Activate a passport-based prepaid SIM for communication.
  3. Order larger household items through Gmarket Global or another service that clearly supports your available payment method.
  4. Ask a trusted person or your relocation contact for help with urgent heavy deliveries.
  5. Open a Korean bank account if a branch accepts your documents, but confirm every account restriction.
  6. After receiving your Residence Card, update your telecom registration before setting up Coupang and other Korean apps.

Korea becomes dramatically more convenient after your phone number, Residence Card information, bank account, and legal name are connected correctly. Until then, the fastest solution is not to force one blocked app. It is to combine several temporary options and keep moving.
