The cooktop beeps, a number flashes, and your pot of water stays cold. In a Korean apartment, that does not necessarily mean the stove is broken. The controls may be locked, the wrong cooking zone may be selected, or the pan may not be suitable for that induction zone.
Start with three checks: the exact cooktop model, the symbol on the display, and the base of the pan. Changing one thing at a time is more useful than pressing every button or buying a new appliance.
This guide covers ordinary user checks, not electrical repairs. If the glass is cracked, there is smoke or sparking, the cord or outlet looks burned, or a breaker keeps tripping, stop using the cooktop. Turn it off and isolate its electrical supply only if you can do so safely; do not reach through water or move a built-in appliance to reach a plug. Contact the landlord and an appropriate service professional. For fire or immediate danger in Korea, call 119.
Is it induction, highlight, or a hybrid cooktop?
In Korean listings, 전기레인지 means electric cooktop. It does not identify the heating method. Check the model information or ask the host which zones are induction.
- 인덕션 — induction: heats compatible magnetic cookware directly. Do not wait for a red heating element to appear.
- 하이라이트 / 라디언트 — highlight/radiant: heats the glass through an electric element. Its heating behavior and cookware requirements differ.
- 하이브리드 — hybrid: combines different heating types. A pan working on one zone does not establish that it will work on an induction zone.
LG explains the distinction in its weak-heating troubleshooting guide. The glass can still become hot during induction cooking from the hot pan. Never check operation by touching the cooking surface.
Read the controls before trying again
You may see Korean words, icons, or both. These translations help you find the relevant control; they are not a button sequence for every model.
| Korean label | Meaning and useful check |
|---|---|
| 전원 | Power. Turning it on may only put the cooktop into standby. |
| 잠금 / 어린이 보호 | Control lock / child lock. Use the release method printed on the panel or in the model manual. |
| 화구 / 버너 | Cooking zone / burner. Select the zone beneath your pan before changing its setting. |
| 화력 / 출력 | Heating power. A numbered level is not automatically a temperature in degrees. |
| 일시정지 / 일시낮춤 | Pause / temporary reduction. Check whether cooking has been paused or reduced. |
| 타이머 | Timer. Check the manual to see whether it only sounds an alarm or switches off a zone. |
| 보온 | Keep warm. Do not confuse it with the heat setting needed to bring cold water to a boil. |
| 부스트 / 터보 | High-power boost. Availability and duration depend on the model and other active zones. |
| 잔열 | Residual heat. The surface may remain hot after cooking stops. |
The display shows L or a padlock
Samsung's L-display guidance identifies L as a control-lock indication on the products it covers. Its example uses a three-second hold on the lock button, but the same page says release methods differ by model. Use that timing only if it matches your panel or manual; do not try random combinations.
Before cleaning the controls, switch cooking off and let the surface cool. Remove anything resting on the panel, wipe away residue as the manual directs, and leave it dry. Samsung's Canadian cooktop guidance explains that moisture or an object touching a control can be detected as a continuously pressed button. That is useful context, not a reason to apply Canadian error-code definitions to a Korean model.
Power is on, but changing the number does nothing
Select the cooking zone under the pan, then adjust its heat level. On the models in Samsung's power-adjustment guide, the zone must be selected before its output can be changed. The control may be a slider, dial, or separate buttons.
If you move a pan, reselect the new zone rather than expecting the heat setting to follow it. Samsung also documents models whose initial automatic pan selection does not repeat when the pan is moved. Automatic selection and continuous cookware detection are not the same feature.
Check the pan before buying a replacement
A pot that worked on a gas burner may not work on induction. Look for an induction/IH marking and check the manufacturer's cookware requirements. The material at the base matters—not just the handle, sides, or the word “stainless” on the packaging.
- On a cool pan, a magnet sticking firmly to the cooking base is a useful screening check. It is not a guarantee of good performance.
- Center the pan on the selected zone. Match the magnetic base diameter to the zone's permitted size range; the wide rim at the top is not the measurement to use.
- Use a stable, flat-bottomed pan with a clean base. Do not use cracked or visibly damaged cookware.
- Do not assume a plain aluminum ramen pot, glass saucepan, or ordinary earthenware 뚝배기 is induction-compatible. A specialty product still needs to meet the cooktop's requirements.
Samsung's no-heating guidance explains why compatible magnetic cookware is needed and why recognition can differ between zones. LG also cautions that a small magnetic section on the base can perform poorly even when cookware has an IH marking. Neither an IH logo nor a magnet test replaces the model's size and material requirements.
A simple comparison check
Only do this if there are no damage, electrical, or overheating warning signs. Use a pan known to work on this cooktop, with water in it—not an empty pan—and follow the normal operating instructions. Stay beside it and stop before it can boil dry.
- With the cooktop cool, put the known-compatible pan on the problem zone and select that zone correctly.
- If it heats, the original pan or its placement is a likely cause. This does not prove the cooktop has no other fault.
- If it does not heat, switch the zone off before moving the pan. If another suitable induction zone is available, try the same pan there using the normal controls.
- If only one zone fails, report that difference. If both fail, report the display and settings rather than concluding that both burners are broken.
Keep the comparison fair: a hybrid's radiant zone is not an induction-compatibility test. Avoid adapter plates, protective mats, or other accessories unless the exact cooktop manufacturer permits them; do not introduce an extra layer while diagnosing a pan-recognition problem.
H, U, P, and error codes: what the display can tell you
Photograph the complete display and match it to the exact model. Letters are not universal across manufacturers.
| Display example | How to interpret it cautiously |
|---|---|
| H / h | LG identifies these as heat-related indications. Keep hands away; a dark display after switching off does not prove the glass is cool. |
| U | On the LG products covered by its guide, check for a missing, unsuitable, or off-center pan. |
| P | LG's cited guide uses P for pause. Do not assume P always means either pause or maximum power on another model. |
| E / E1 | LG's guide associates these with a prolonged control press or contamination. Stop cooking and check the panel safely. |
| E6, or another persistent code | Use the model's instructions. LG links E6 in its guide to excessive cooling-fan-sensor temperature and advises switching off and cooling before retrying. |
Source: LG's H/h/P/U/E/E1/E6 display guide. LG notes that H/h can also appear after initial connection or a power interruption. Do not use that exception to dismiss a hot surface. If a code returns after the permitted basic checks, request service rather than repeatedly resetting the appliance.
Why the heat weakens—or a fan keeps running
Check whether a pause, keep-warm, or timer setting is active. Then note whether the change happens only when another zone is switched on. Some cooktops share a total power limit across active zones; Samsung's Korean induction range information describes installation-dependent power limits on products in its range. Do not treat one advertised wattage as the limit for every apartment.
Try the normal setting with fewer active zones only when the cooktop is otherwise operating safely. Do not change installer settings, breaker ratings, or wiring to obtain more power. Electrical capacity and appliance settings need to be assessed together by a qualified professional.
A radiant element cycling on and off can be part of temperature control. An induction unit can also reduce or stop heating to protect against excessive temperature. LG's weak-heating guide discusses both, but a repeated shutdown under ordinary use still deserves investigation. Switch cooking off, allow cooling as instructed, and ask for service if it keeps happening.
A fan after cooking is a different matter. Samsung's cooling-fan explanation says the fan may continue until internal temperature falls. Do not cut power solely to silence a normal cooldown fan. Keep the specified ventilation space clear; do not insert anything into vents. Smoke, burning smells, or abnormal electrical signs require stopping use, not waiting for “normal cooling.”
For a separate concern about electricity costs, our guide to reading a high Korean electricity bill helps you compare the billing period and household use. A bill alone cannot diagnose a faulty cooking zone.
If the entire cooktop is dark
Check whether the rest of the home has power. If there is a clearly labeled, accessible cooktop supply switch, check its status without removing covers. A portable model may have a plug; a built-in model may be plugged in or hardwired. Do not lift the cooktop or pull out cabinetry to find out.
Samsung's no-power guidance distinguishes plug-in and dedicated-circuit installations and discourages power-strip use. Do not move the cooktop onto a travel adapter, extension lead, or shared power strip as a test.
If a breaker is off and you do not know why, ask the landlord or building manager before restoring power. If it trips again, leave the affected circuit off and arrange inspection. Do not keep resetting it, replace it with a higher-rated breaker, or open an electrical panel. Samsung's installation guidance explains that some installations require separate electrical work and an appropriate circuit breaker.
When to stop checking and book service
Stop immediately for cracked glass, electrical damage, smoke, or repeated breaker trips. Do not use an apparently unaffected zone on a cracked cooktop. Electrolux's cracked-glass safety guidance says to switch the appliance off and disconnect it from the mains. Only isolate power in a way you can reach safely.
For a non-emergency fault in a furnished rental, tell the landlord before authorizing replacement. Send:
- the model number, or a clear photo of the visible branding and controls;
- the complete error display and which zone is affected;
- whether another known-compatible pan worked;
- whether it started after cleaning, moving in, a power interruption, or a spill;
- what you have already tried, without repeating unsafe tests for a video.
Use LG's model-manual search or Samsung's download center for the correct instructions. For a different brand, use the contact shown in its manual or the installer's paperwork. If the model label is underneath a built-in unit, ask for the installation record rather than removing the appliance.
Ask who will arrange the visit, what the inspection or call-out charge is, and whether approval is needed before replacing parts. Keep the messages and receipt; do not assume either party automatically pays every repair. Our rental repair and deposit-deduction guide explains how to organize that evidence.
Hello. The [left/right] zone of the kitchen cooktop does not heat. The power [comes on/does not come on], and the display shows [symbol/code]. I will send the model and photos. Do you have the manual or a designated service contact? If repair is needed, I would like to confirm how to arrange it and who will cover the cost first.
Before leaving the kitchen after any successful check, switch the cooking zones off, confirm the controls show the intended state, and keep the surface clear while it cools. Removing a pan is not a substitute for switching the zone off.
