You come home, touch the keypad, and nothing lights up. Before ordering a replacement lock, check whether your door lock has a manufacturer-approved emergency power connection. On models designed for it, a fresh 9V alkaline battery can temporarily power the lock so you can use your normal access code. It does not bypass the code or repair a jammed mechanism.

This guide is for residents and guests trying to enter a home they are authorized to use. Start with the brand and exact model: two locks that look similar can have different terminals, batteries, and opening sequences.

If someone is in immediate danger, stop troubleshooting. For fire, an urgent rescue, or a medical emergency in Korea, call 119. Explain what is happening and give the address, building, and unit. Do not delay to buy a battery if a child or vulnerable person is trapped and at risk. The National Fire Agency's 119 reporting guidance explains what information to give. An ordinary lockout without danger should go to the host, building manager, or a lock service.

Illustration only: the pictured lock and battery position are not a model-specific connection guide. Use only the designated emergency-power contacts and battery specified in your exact lock manual; do not copy the pictured contact position.

First, identify what is actually failing

Check the building and unit number, especially in a large apartment complex or an unfamiliar short-term rental. If you are stuck at the shared lobby entrance rather than your apartment door, contact building management; do not try apartment-lock battery instructions on the communal intercom.

What you noticeWhat to do next
The keypad stays dark and makes no sound.A power problem is possible. Identify the model and its approved emergency power method.
The keypad responds, but rejects your code.Confirm the current code with the host or household. Stop guessing; repeated failed attempts can temporarily disable entry.
You hear an opening sound, but the door will not move normally.Do not assume more batteries will solve it. Report the sound and resistance to the service center.
The lock works locally, but not through an app.Use an already registered local access method if available. Do not factory-reset the lock just to troubleshoot the app.
You are inside and the door will not open.Use only the model's normal interior handle or documented manual opening control. If you cannot exit safely, seek urgent help.

A black keypad is a symptom, not proof that the batteries are dead. Photograph the brand and any visible model marking, then note whether there is a light, voice message, alarm, or motor sound. Do not record yourself entering a PIN.

Gateman documents temporary lockouts after repeated unregistered entries, with different durations by model. Follow the waiting period in your own instructions; there is no universal “try again after three minutes” rule. See the Gateman FAQ, including its lockout guidance.

Using a 9V emergency battery—only on a compatible lock

Find the exact instructions before applying power. Gateman's FAQ describes external emergency contacts on compatible models; Yale's Keyless Connected emergency-power instructions show another model-specific example. Neither establishes that every Korean door lock uses the same connection.

  1. Confirm that the manual specifies a 9V alkaline battery. Locate the designated emergency terminals, not an unidentified opening or exposed piece of metal.
  2. Apply the fresh battery as the model instructions show. Use the indicated contact arrangement and maintain contact during the prescribed opening procedure.
  3. Wake the keypad and authenticate normally. Enter your valid code or use another registered method explicitly supported by that model. Touching the panel, pressing a confirmation key, and timing vary.
  4. Once inside, replace the internal batteries as specified. The outside battery was temporary power, not a recharge of the exhausted batteries inside.

If the model instead specifies another backup method, use that method. Do not improvise with a phone charger, loose wires, or a different voltage. If you cannot identify the contacts confidently, send a cropped product photo to the host or manufacturer and ask them to identify the model.

To ask a shop for the battery, show this:

9V 사각 알카라인 건전지 있나요?

Do you have a rectangular 9V alkaline battery?

A nearby convenience store is worth asking, but stock and price vary. Confirm that you need 9V before going; the internal replacement batteries may be a different size. Do not keep buying batteries if a fresh, correctly applied one produces no response—call for model-specific help.

What if emergency power does not open the door?

The keypad still does not light up

Recheck the model, specified battery, and contact placement against the instructions. Stop if contacts look damaged, wet, or corroded. Do not scrape terminals, spray cleaner into the lock, or open its outside casing. Tell the service center that the lock remains unresponsive with the specified fresh emergency battery.

The keypad lights up, but your code does not work

Power and permission are separate problems. Ask whether the host changed the code or whether a guest code has expired. If someone is inside, ask them to use the normal interior opening method. Do not seek a master code online or start a reset procedure. A replacement battery is not a remedy for an unknown PIN.

The motor sounds, but the door sticks

Use the handle in its normal direction without forcing it. Stop if opening requires lifting, kicking, levering, or repeated hard pulling. LG's smart-lock guidance on stiff doors explains that the lock hardware can catch against a misaligned strike plate. That is a different issue from loss of power.

For a rental, ask for professional inspection rather than adjusting the door frame yourself. A useful report is “the code is accepted and I hear the motor, but the door sticks,” not simply “the battery is broken.”

Who to contact in Korea

For an ordinary lockout, start with the person responsible for the property. A hotel or short-stay host may have its own access procedure. For a rental apartment, contact the landlord or management office and ask whether they have an approved installer.

When arranging a visit, provide the Korean road-name address, building and unit, your callback number, and the entrance the technician should use. Our guide to explaining the correct building entrance has directions you can adapt for a service visit.

Ask about the price before dispatch

Request an estimate that separates the visit charge, evening or holiday surcharge, opening work, replacement parts, and tax. Ask what you would owe if the visit is canceled or the technician cannot open the door. A low advertised call-out price is not necessarily the full bill.

Before agreeing to drilling or replacement, ask why it is necessary, what will be damaged, and what the complete replacement cost would be. In a non-emergency rental situation, obtain the landlord's approval for destructive work. Be ready to establish your right to enter; ask what evidence the service provider accepts rather than assuming a universal document list.

Keep the estimate, messages, diagnosis, and itemized receipt. Do not assume that either the tenant or landlord automatically pays every lock-related charge. For organizing repair records and later disputes, see Korea Rental Deposit Deductions: Move-Out Costs and Disputes.

Choose the message that matches what happened. Replace the brackets; leave out any detail you have not checked.

To the landlord or host:

안녕하세요. [건물명/호수] 현관 도어록 번호판에 불이 안 들어와서 집에 들어가지 못하고 있습니다. 제조사는 [브랜드]이고 모델명은 [모델명/확인 불가]입니다. 사진을 보내 드릴게요. 비상전원 사용 방법이나 지정 수리업체가 있을까요?

Hello. The entry-door keypad at [building/unit] will not light up, and I cannot get inside. The brand is [brand] and the model is [model/unknown]. I will send a photo. Is there an emergency-power procedure or a designated repair company?

If the lock accepts the code but sticks:

비밀번호를 입력하면 작동 소리는 나는데 문이 열리지 않습니다. 무리하게 힘을 주지는 않았습니다.

When I enter the code, I hear it operate, but the door does not open. I have not forced it.

Before booking a technician:

출장비와 야간 할증을 포함한 예상 총비용을 문자로 보내 주세요. 파손 개방이나 교체가 필요하면 작업 전에 이유와 추가 비용을 설명해 주세요.

Please text the estimated total, including the visit charge and nighttime surcharge. If destructive opening or replacement is needed, please explain why and any additional cost before starting.

Share address and product photos privately with the verified service contact. Do not post your PIN, ID, lease, or a photograph showing your unit and access details in a public community chat.

Once inside: replace the batteries and check the lock

Read the battery compartment label or model manual for the required chemistry, size, and number. Do not assume every lock takes four AA batteries.

  1. Keep access available while you work; do not let the door shut and lock you out again.
  2. Replace the full set with fresh batteries of the specified type. Follow every positive/negative marking in the compartment.
  3. Do not mix old and new cells or use a different chemistry simply because it fits. Yale's battery FAQ warns against mixing cells, and its battery recommendation specifies alkaline batteries for the locks it covers. Your exact model instructions remain decisive.
  4. If there is leakage, corrosion, unusual heat, or damaged wiring, stop and request service instead of treating it as a routine replacement.
  5. Follow the manual's functional check with the door open where instructed. Retract any extended bolt before closing. Confirm normal opening and the intended locking mode before relying on the door again.

If the door now opens but will not automatically lock, battery replacement may not be the whole answer. Zigbang's auto-lock troubleshooting identifies power, mode settings, and door alignment as separate checks. Do not leave assuming a beep means the door is secure.

Finally, save the model number and official service contact on your phone, record the battery-change date, and respond promptly to the next low-battery warning. If your lock supports an emergency battery or supplied mechanical backup key, keep that backup somewhere you can lawfully and safely reach when locked out—not only in the apartment.
