For a first city-bus ride in Seoul, confirm the exact stop and direction, board through the front door, tap a supported transit card, press the stop button before your destination, and tap again when leaving through the rear door. The bus number alone is not enough: check the route's next stops, because a nearby stop may take you away from your hotel.
Checked October 18, 2026 (Korea Standard Time). This guide covers ordinary Seoul city buses. Airport coaches and intercity buses have separate ticketing and boarding arrangements. Live arrivals, diversions, and accepted payment methods should be checked for the bus you actually take.
Before you leave: save the route, not just the bus number
Search your starting point and destination in NAVER Map or KakaoMap, with the departure time set to your actual travel time. Seoul's official public transportation guide directs riders to these map services and the city's bus information service for route and arrival information.
- Save the boarding stop. Check its Korean name, stop ID where shown, and the walking route to it.
- Check the direction. Match the route's destination or next stops with your map result. Nearby stops can have similar names.
- Save the exit stop. Keep its Korean name and the stop immediately before it visible on your phone.
- Check the remaining walk. A direct bus is less useful if its final stop leaves you with a difficult uphill walk or a long road crossing.
At the stop, compare the route number on the physical sign or arrival display with your result. If it does not match, recheck the location before crossing a road. Arrival estimates can change while you walk, so refresh once you reach the stop.
Prepare payment before the bus arrives
Have a supported transit card with enough balance ready. Some Seoul buses operate without cash; Seoul publishes a cashless-route list (January 2026 list, page updated March 6, 2026). Carrying banknotes alone is therefore a poor backup.
If you are still choosing a card, use our Seoul transit-card comparison to check service coverage and separate balances. A card that works for shopping does not establish that it works on your bus; follow the payment media shown by the operator.
Board, ride, and get off in this order
Seoul's official bus instructions specify front-door boarding, rear-door exit, tapping on entry and exit, and using the stop bell before arrival.
- Board at the front and tap. Check that the reader accepts the card before moving into the bus. Keep the card separate from other cards so you present the intended one.
- Move clear of the entrance. Sit if a seat is available, or hold a handrail while standing. Keep bags clear of the aisle and doors.
- Watch the upcoming stops. Follow the onboard display or announcements alongside your map. A weak data connection is less stressful when you have saved the stop name.
- Press the stop button in advance. Do this after the preceding stop, before the bus reaches yours. Wait until the bus stops to step off.
- Tap the same card at the exit reader. Leave through the rear door after the tap is accepted.
Transfers: the exit tap is part of the journey
For eligible pay-as-you-go transfers, Seoul's official fare rules require an exit tap and the next boarding within 30 minutes, extended to 60 minutes from 21:00 to 07:00. A journey can include up to four transfers, and boarding the same vehicle or the same route again does not receive the transfer discount. Extra distance charges can still apply.
Use the same card throughout. If you miss an exit tap, do not assume the next ride will be treated as a discounted transfer. Unlimited passes have their own coverage and use conditions; check the product you loaded.
If something goes wrong
- The card is rejected: pause at the reader and check the message. Ask the driver before repeatedly tapping or assuming cash will work. If payment cannot be resolved, follow the driver's instructions and get off safely while the bus is stopped. Check or reload your supported card before trying another bus.
- You boarded in the wrong direction: get off at a safe stop and search again from there. Reboarding the same route in the opposite direction does not qualify for the same-route transfer discount.
- You missed your stop: press the bell for the next stop and reroute. Do not ask to leave between stops or try to open a moving bus's door.
- The bus feels too complicated today: compare a subway route with clearer station entrances and fewer direction decisions. A slightly longer route can be easier with an unfamiliar phone setup.
One useful question is 이 버스가 [destination]에 가나요? — “Does this bus go to [destination]?” Show the Korean place name or address with the question.
Apply it to your own Seoul day
In Korea Trip Planner, choose Seoul, your dates, and a realistic pace; add your hotel area in the optional details. Use the resulting day plan to decide which places belong together, then check each bus leg in a live transit service. The planner organizes a trip; it does not confirm a live bus departure or diversion.
If map setup is the problem, our Korea travel-app guide helps you prepare the navigation tools before the first ride.
