How to Find Public Toilets in Seoul: Maps, Access, and Useful Korean

Quick answer: Open Seoul’s official public-toilet map, move to the area you are visiting, and choose a nearby listing. Then check the entrance, opening restrictions, and the facilities you need. A toilet marker tells you where to look; it does not confirm that the door is open right now.

Information applies to: the map interface observed on October 18, 2026. Actually checked: October 18, 2026. Individual toilets, access arrangements, and website controls can change.

Start with the correct Seoul public-toilet map

Use the Smart Seoul Map public-toilet layer, titled 공중화장실. At the time of checking, this layer offered Korean only in its language selector. Do not assume that an English-language event map showing restroom icons is the same citywide resource. (Source: Seoul Metropolitan Government’s live map; interface applies as observed and checked October 18, 2026.)

  1. Find your area on the map. Move the map and zoom until you recognize your station, street, or destination. If you have moved away from the initial area, use 현 지도에서 재검색 (“search again in the current map area”).
  2. Switch to the list. The list icon beside the grid icon opens nearby entries. 거리순 means “by distance”; 이름순 means “by name.” Treat distance sorting as a shortlist, rather than a promise of the easiest walking route.
  3. Open an entry. Read its Korean name and any contact information provided. In the checked listing for 서울글로벌센터 개방화장실, the popup identified public access and supplied a telephone number. Information may differ between entries.
  4. Confirm the actual entrance. A building pin may still leave you looking for a basement, another floor, or a side entrance. Save the Korean name and ask staff before walking farther.

The list controls and example popup above were checked directly on the official map on October 18, 2026; they describe the interface on that date, not a live inspection of the toilets.

Check access before relying on a pin

개방화장실 means a restroom opened for public use. The label does not by itself tell you the current opening hours, which entrance to use, or whether a key is needed. If the location is inside a building, check the building’s posted hours and ask whether the restroom is accessible to visitors at that moment.

Choose a second nearby option before heading out, especially late in the evening. If the first entrance is locked or a sign says it is unavailable, move to the backup rather than assuming another door must be open. Do not enter a restricted area to reach a toilet shown on a map.

If you need wheelchair access or a changing table

Ask about the entire route: a step-free entrance, a working lift if needed, the correct floor, and a suitable stall. For a baby-changing table, ask which restroom contains it. A general toilet marker cannot answer all of those questions.

Seoul’s official universal-design report describes improvements at three named community service centers, including clearer signs and facilities for people accompanying children. It is evidence about those projects, not confirmation that every Seoul toilet has the same features. (Report dated July 16, 2021; applies to the projects described then; source checked October 18, 2026. Current facilities and availability were not independently inspected.)

Korean phrases to show a staff member

  • 화장실 어디예요? — Where is the restroom?
  • 지금 이용할 수 있어요? — Can I use it now?
  • 화장실이 몇 층에 있어요? — What floor is the restroom on?
  • 휠체어로 이용할 수 있는 화장실이 있어요? — Is there a wheelchair-accessible restroom?
  • 기저귀 교환대가 있어요? — Is there a baby-changing table?

Keep tissues and hand sanitizer as a backup, and follow the disposal instructions displayed inside. If your next problem is getting to the entrance, our Korea travel-app setup guide explains the map and translation tools that help with Korean place names and signs.
