Korean Supermarket Closing Days: How to Check Your Exact Store

To check whether a Korean supermarket is open, look up the exact branch and its dated closure list. Do not rely on a rule that every large supermarket closes on the second and fourth Sundays. Two branches of the same chain can list different closed days, and normal opening hours do not override a closure date.

Official information checked October 14, 2026 (Korea Standard Time). The branch dates below are examples from the retailers' public pages on this date. Recheck the relevant month and branch before your own trip; these are not telephone confirmations or guarantees of stock.

Why a Sunday rule can send you to a closed store

On our October 14 check, the official Emart Yangjae branch page listed October 14 and October 28 as closed dates, both Wednesdays. It also listed normal hours of 10:00–23:00. The hours describe an operating day; they do not mean the shop opens on a listed closure day.

The official Emart Garden5 page, checked the same day, said it closes on the second and fourth Sundays and showed October 25 as its next listed closure. These two Seoul branches are enough to show why copying one shop's pattern to another is unreliable. They are examples of schedule differences, not a recommendation to travel across Seoul between them.

Check the branch, date, and hours in that order

  1. Identify the actual store. Save its Korean name and street address. A search for a chain alone can lead to a different branch, a smaller store format, or a shop inside another building.
  2. Open the retailer's official store finder. Match the address with your map result, then read the branch's closure information. If a page only shows this month's dates, do not extend its pattern into a later month without checking again.
  3. Compare your visit date with the closed dates. Keep the month as well as the day. A line such as 10/28 means October 28 in this context; a screenshot saved in September cannot establish an October schedule.
  4. Read the opening hours and any dated notice. Allow time to shop and pay before closing. If you need a particular counter or shop within the building, check that business separately.
  5. Save one nearby backup. Confirm its own schedule rather than assuming another branch or chain will be open.

Where to find official store information

Emart's official closing-day finder has a store-name search, regional filters, and a 휴점일 알아보기 section for closed days. Search the Korean branch name when an English spelling does not find the location. These controls were checked October 14, 2026.

Homeplus's official store finder, checked October 14, 2026, accepts a store name or address and distinguishes 마트 (Mart) from 익스프레스 (Express). Match the format as well as the name. For another retailer, start from its official website and find its store locator; do not use an old third-party holiday calendar as your final answer.

Read the Korean schedule labels

영업시간Opening hours
휴점일 / 휴무일Closed dates or days
영업중 / 휴점Open / Closed; check when the status applies

In a date list, 수 means Wednesday and 일 means Sunday. Read the date before the weekday abbreviation. Phone translation can help with a notice, but keep the branch name and original date visible so a translation does not lose the part that matters.

If the map and official page disagree

First check that both pages identify the same address and month. A building's hours may differ from those of its supermarket or individual tenants; the Garden5 page, for example, lists separate tenant hours. Check the retailer's current notice and contact the branch when the conflict remains. Use the published contact route rather than assuming a map's “Open” badge settles it.

You can show the branch page and ask: 이 지점은 10월 28일에 문을 여나요? — “Is this branch open on October 28?” Replace the date with your own. If the enquiry is about today, ask 오늘 몇 시까지 영업하나요? — “Until what time are you open today?”

If your supermarket is closed

For a few immediate essentials, check a nearby convenience store or smaller grocery shop. For a full grocery list, find another supermarket whose date and hours you have confirmed. Check availability of the items you actually need; a store being open does not establish its inventory. Treat delivery as a separate option with its own address, account, payment, and available-slot checks.

Korea Local Lens can help find covered markets and local essentials near your area, with practical details and map links. It is a curated collection, and its hours are not live. For an online-shopping backup, My Korea Setup's service checks separate phone, identity, payment, and core-use requirements; review the source and check date rather than treating a result as delivery availability.
