Where to Get Passport Photos in Korea: Studios, Photo Booths, and Digital Files

Official passport and immigration photo requirements checked: .

You need a passport photo tomorrow, search “photo booth” on a Korean map app, and find dozens of places covered in colorful sample portraits.

The problem is that not every place taking small photographs produces an official document photo.

And even when it does, saying only “passport photo” may not be enough.

A Korean passport, a Korean Residence Card, a U.S. passport and a UK online passport application do not all use the same specifications.

Before choosing a photo studio or booth in Korea, check the exact requirements of the organization receiving the photo. Then show those requirements to the photographer or confirm that the machine offers the correct document-photo mode.

This guide explains where to get document photos in Korea, when a staffed photo studio is worth the extra effort, when a self-service booth can work, and how to request a digital file without accidentally creating a photo that will be rejected.

The fastest safe method

1. Check the exact photo requirements for your passport, visa or Residence Card.
2. Save the official requirements page or screenshot.
3. Search 여권사진 or 증명사진 near you.
4. Tell the shop the issuing country and document type.
5. Ask whether you need printed photos, a digital file, or both.
6. Check the final size and file before leaving.

Do not ask for “the usual Korean passport size” when the application is for another country.

Where can you get passport photos in Korea?

You have three practical options.

1. A staffed neighborhood photo studio

For an important passport, visa or immigration application, this is usually the easiest option.

Search Naver Map or KakaoMap for:

  • 여권사진 — passport photo,
  • 증명사진 — ID/document photo,
  • 사진관 — photo studio, or
  • 비자사진 — visa photo.

Add your neighborhood or subway station.

For example:

홍대 여권사진

or:

강남역 증명사진

Before travelling, check:

  • whether walk-ins are accepted,
  • today's hours,
  • whether passport or visa photos are offered,
  • whether a digital JPG file is included, and
  • how long printing takes.

Why a staffed studio is useful

A photographer can check:

  • head position,
  • background,
  • face size,
  • glasses glare,
  • hair covering the face,
  • printing size, and
  • the difference between one country's passport rules and another's.

This matters when your application is expensive or difficult to resubmit.

Some Korean studios explicitly offer passport and ID photography. Photomatic, for example, states in its official FAQ that ID and passport photos can be added to its studio packages. That is one provider example—not a recommendation or a claim that every self-photo studio offers compliant document photos.

Prices vary considerably by neighborhood, retouching, number of prints and file delivery, so ask for the total before the shoot rather than relying on an old review.

What should you tell the photographer?

Do not start with:

“I need a passport photo.”

Start with:

“I need a passport photo for [country].”

or:

“I need a photo for a Korean Residence Card.”

Show the official requirement page on your phone.

미국 여권용 사진이 필요합니다. 미국 여권 규격으로 촬영할 수 있나요?

I need a photo for a U.S. passport. Can you take it to U.S. passport specifications?

외국인등록증 신청용 사진이 필요합니다. 3.5cm × 4.5cm 규격입니다.

I need a photo for a Korean Residence Card application. The size is 3.5 × 4.5 cm.

2. Self-service ID-photo booths

Korean subway stations and other public areas sometimes have instant ID-photo machines.

Seoul city information has documented self-service photo machines in subway stations for urgent ID and passport-style photographs.

They can be useful when:

  • you need a standard photo quickly,
  • you do not need extensive help,
  • the required size is offered on the machine, and
  • you only need printed photographs.

Search for:

  • 무인 증명사진,
  • 즉석 증명사진, or
  • 증명사진 자판기.

Do not make a special trip based on an old list of subway photo booths.

Machines can be moved, replaced or removed.

Check a current map listing, station information or recent photograph before travelling.

Before paying at a booth

Look for the exact document mode.

You may see:

여권사진

or:

증명사진

Those are better signs than a machine that simply says:

Photo Booth

with decorative frames.

3. Entertainment photo booths: do not assume they are passport booths

Korea has countless self-photo booths for couples, friends, K-pop collaborations and four-cut photographs.

These are excellent for souvenirs.

They are not automatically suitable for:

  • passports,
  • visas,
  • Residence Cards, or
  • government identification.

A booth designed to imitate an ID-photo aesthetic may still:

  • use the wrong crop,
  • apply filters,
  • change skin tone,
  • alter facial proportions,
  • use a colored background, or
  • print the wrong physical size.

Use it only if the operator explicitly offers an official document-photo service matching the requirement you need.

Korean passport photos: the official dimensions

If the application is for a Republic of Korea passport, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs currently requires:

  • a color photograph taken within the previous six months,
  • full frontal upper-body view,
  • no hat or ordinary head accessory,
  • a uniform white background,
  • printed size of 3.5 cm × 4.5 cm, and
  • head length from crown to chin of 3.2–3.6 cm.

Do not ask the studio to “make you look better” by changing your face

The Korean passport authority explicitly prohibits photographs altered through:

  • photo-editing software,
  • filters,
  • AI editing,
  • compositing, or
  • artificial background replacement.

A photographer can adjust lighting and produce a clean passport photograph.

They should not redesign your jawline, enlarge your eyes or digitally rebuild the background in a way that violates the passport rule.

제출 기관의 사진 규정에 맞춰 주세요. 한국 여권용은 얼굴 보정이나 배경 교체를 하지 말아 주세요.

Please follow the receiving authority's photo rules. For a Korean passport, please do not retouch my face or replace the background.

Glasses and lenses

For a Korean passport, the eyes must be clearly visible and glasses must not create problematic reflections.

Colored contact lenses and tinted glasses are not accepted under the current passport guidance.

Requirements differ for other countries, so do not copy the Korean rule into another passport application.

Residence Card photos use a similar size—but not identical composition rules

Korea Immigration Service currently requires one passport-style photograph for foreigner registration.

The published standard is:

  • 3.5 cm × 4.5 cm,
  • taken within the previous six months,
  • color, frontal face,
  • white background without a border, and
  • face length from crown to chin of 2.5–3.5 cm.

Official source: Korea Immigration Service photo standard (fact-checked October 9, 2026).

Official source: Korea Immigration Service — Foreigner Registration Photo Standard.

Same print size does not mean identical photo specification.

Korean passport:

head length 3.2–3.6 cm

Korean foreigner registration:

face length 2.5–3.5 cm

If one photograph needs to be reused for several documents, ask the receiving agencies whether it satisfies each requirement rather than assuming it does.

If you are preparing your first registration, our Korea Residence Card application guide covers the appointment and document process separately.

Foreign passport? Check your own country's rule first

Korean photo studios can produce many international formats.

But the photographer needs to know what format you need.

Example: U.S. passport

The U.S. Department of State currently requires:

  • one color photo from the previous six months,
  • plain white or off-white background,
  • unedited image,
  • neutral expression,
  • printed size 2 × 2 inches / 51 × 51 mm, and
  • head height of roughly 25–35 mm.

That is visibly different from a Korean 3.5 × 4.5 cm passport print.

Official source: U.S. Department of State — Passport Photos.

Example: UK online passport

UK online passport applications normally use a digital photo rather than a Korean-style 3.5 × 4.5 cm print.

The current UK guidance says the digital photograph must:

  • have been taken within the last month,
  • be unaltered,
  • be at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall,
  • be between 50 KB and 10 MB, and
  • use a plain light-colored background.

The useful lesson

Do not tell a Korean photographer:

“Just give me the standard passport photo.”

Tell them:

country + document + print/digital requirement.

Better request

“I need a U.S. passport photo, 51 × 51 mm, and I also want the digital image.”

or:

“I need a UK digital passport photograph. I do not need Korean passport prints.”

What if the studio has never handled your country's passport?

Show the official page.

Do not ask the photographer to search random blogs for the rule while you wait.

Save:

  • required physical dimensions,
  • head size,
  • background color,
  • digital pixel requirements,
  • file format and size, and
  • any unusual eyewear or expression rule.

If the studio is unsure whether it can meet those requirements, use another one.

Do you need a digital passport photo file?

Ask before the photograph is taken.

In Korean:

인화 사진 말고 디지털 파일도 받을 수 있나요?

Can I receive a digital file as well as printed photos?

Also ask:

제출용 JPG 파일로 받을 수 있나요?

Can you provide it as a JPG file for online submission?

Do not assume:

“digital file included”

means:

“digital file already resized for my passport authority.”

You need to check the actual pixel size and file size.

Korean online passport renewal: digital file specifications

For eligible Korean passport online reissuance, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs currently requires the uploaded file to meet these technical specifications:

  • JPG or JPEG,
  • 500 KB or less,
  • recommended size 413 × 531 pixels,
  • accepted range of approximately 395–431 px wide and 507–550 px high,
  • 300 dpi recommended, and
  • photographed within six months.

Use the official Korean photo checker

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also provides an online passport photo verification tool.

If you are using a digital Korean passport photograph, test it there before submitting the final application.

A photo passing the automated pre-check is useful, but the Ministry still warns that the final passport review can reject a photo that does not satisfy the actual requirements.

Can you take the photo yourself?

For a Korean passport, yes—in principle.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says a self-taken photograph can be accepted when it fully meets the passport-photo requirements.

The difficulty is getting:

  • correct lighting,
  • correct head size,
  • clean background,
  • no distortion, and
  • correct digital output

without “fixing” the image later in a way the rules prohibit.

If the application is urgent, a professional ID-photo studio is often simpler than taking 40 phone photos and then discovering that the face is too large.

Do not use AI background replacement

This is especially important now.

Korea's current passport rules explicitly include AI-created or AI-edited images among prohibited manipulated photographs.

Do not take a selfie in your bedroom and ask an app to:

  • replace the wall with white,
  • reshape the face,
  • remove hair,
  • change clothing, or
  • generate a “passport photo.”

The photo is supposed to document your real current appearance.

If you already have a digital file and only need prints

You may not need another photo session.

Search for:

증명사진 인화

or ask a photo studio whether it can print your existing file at the required dimensions.

Tell the shop the finished photograph size.

이 파일을 3.5cm × 4.5cm 여권사진 크기로 인화하고 싶어요.

I would like to print this file at 3.5 × 4.5 cm passport-photo size.

Do not ask an ordinary printer to shrink a 4×6 photo and guess the crop

The physical image size is only one requirement.

If enlarging or shrinking changes the required head size or crop, the resulting print may not comply.

Use a photo studio or document-photo printing service that can keep the correct proportions.

Staffed studio vs. self-service booth: which should you choose?

Choose a staffed photo studio when:

  • the passport is from outside Korea,
  • you need a digital file with specific dimensions,
  • your application has already rejected one photo,
  • you need help with glasses or head covering requirements,
  • the photo is for a child or baby, or
  • you want someone to check the result.

Choose a self-service ID booth when:

  • you need a straightforward standard photo quickly,
  • the machine explicitly offers the required format,
  • you understand the pose and size rules, and
  • you do not need special digital output.

What should you wear?

The document authority matters more than a universal Korean dress rule.

For an ordinary document photo:

  • wear normal clothing,
  • avoid clothing that visually disappears into the required background,
  • keep the face clearly visible, and
  • avoid unnecessary accessories around the face.

Do not rent a suit purely because Korean studios sometimes advertise 취업사진.

A job-application portrait and a passport photograph are different products.

Passport photo vs. 취업사진

This distinction matters in Korea because many photo studios specialize in polished employment portraits.

취업사진 can involve:

  • more retouching,
  • hair styling,
  • makeup,
  • formal clothing, or
  • a presentation-focused portrait.

A passport photograph has stricter identity requirements and much less freedom for cosmetic editing.

Do not tell the studio:

“Make it look like a Korean job photo.”

when the file will be submitted to a passport authority.

When something goes wrong

The studio printed 3 × 4 cm instead of 3.5 × 4.5 cm

Stop before submitting it.

Check the official requirement for your document.

증명사진 is a broad category in Korea and historically appears in several different print sizes.

Do not assume every “ID photo” is a passport photo.

Ask the studio to reprint the existing image at the correct dimensions if the composition allows it.

The digital file is the wrong size

Do not immediately compress, crop and resize the photo using several random apps.

First compare:

  • pixel dimensions,
  • file type,
  • file size,
  • head position, and
  • background

with the official submission instructions.

If the studio supplied the file, ask whether it can export a compliant submission copy.

The Korean online passport system rejects the file

Use the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' official photo-verification tool.

If the file fails, check the exact problem rather than shooting again immediately.

Typical issues listed by the Ministry include:

  • wrong background,
  • incorrect head size,
  • low resolution,
  • face positioned too high or low,
  • distorted proportions,
  • colored lenses, and
  • noncompliant editing.

If the automatic tool passes but the passport application later rejects the photo, follow the reason given by the passport office. Automated screening does not replace final review.

The photographer retouched your face too much

Ask for a version that meets the receiving authority's editing rules; for a Korean passport, request a file without facial retouching or artificial background replacement.

You do not need to accept:

  • a narrower jaw,
  • larger eyes,
  • changed nose shape, or
  • skin editing that removes identifying features

just because that is the studio's normal portrait style.

여권 제출용입니다. 제출 기관에서 금지하는 보정은 하지 않은 파일로 부탁드릴게요.

This is for a passport application. Please give me a file without any editing prohibited by the receiving authority.

Your passport authority requires another size

Do not cut down a Korean passport print with scissors unless the issuing authority explicitly permits the resulting format.

Return to the studio with the correct specification.

For example, a Korean 35 × 45 mm photograph cannot simply be treated as a U.S. 51 × 51 mm passport photograph.

You forgot to ask for the digital file

Contact the studio soon.

Ask whether the image is still retained and whether a digital copy can be purchased or sent.

오늘 찍은 여권사진 디지털 파일도 받을 수 있을까요?

Can I also receive the digital file for the passport photo I took today?

Studios have different retention policies.

Do not assume they permanently store every customer photograph.

You lost the printed photos but still have the file

Ask a photo studio or print service to make another set using the exact document dimensions.

You normally do not need to take a new photograph merely because the printed copies were lost—provided the photograph itself remains recent enough and still meets the receiving authority's rules.

The photo was taken more than six months ago

For a Korean passport and Korean Residence Card, take a new photo.

Both current Korean requirements specify a photograph from the previous six months.

Other countries can use different freshness rules.

The UK, for example, currently requires a new digital passport photograph taken within the previous month.

You need the photograph today

Search:

여권사진 당일 + neighborhood

or:

즉석 증명사진

Then call or message before travelling.

Ask:

오늘 여권사진 촬영하고 바로 받을 수 있나요?

Can I take a passport photo today and receive it immediately?

What about passport photos at Incheon Airport?

Do not make the airport your normal plan for an ordinary passport renewal or visa application.

Airport passport-service facilities exist for specific passport-related situations, but opening hours and eligible procedures matter.

If you discover a passport problem immediately before travel, contact the airport passport office or relevant embassy/consulate and explain the actual situation before searching for a photo machine.

A passport photograph alone cannot fix an expired or invalid travel document.

Child and baby passport photos

For babies and small children, a staffed studio is usually worth considering.

Rules can allow age-specific exceptions, but the child normally still needs:

  • a clear face,
  • no visible supporting adult,
  • the required background, and
  • correct composition.

Do not assume rules for a Korean passport child photo also apply to an American, British or other passport.

Check the child's issuing authority before the appointment.

Religious head coverings

Many passport authorities allow religious head coverings under specified conditions as long as the face remains visible.

Medical exceptions may also exist.

Because the wording differs by authority, bring the relevant official guidance to the studio.

Do not ask the photographer to decide whether your religious or medical exception satisfies another country's passport law.

Useful Korean phrases at the photo studio

I need a passport photo.

여권사진이 필요합니다.

It is for a U.S. passport.

미국 여권용입니다.

It is for a Korean Residence Card.

외국인등록증용입니다.

Can you make it 3.5 × 4.5 cm?

3.5cm × 4.5cm 규격으로 가능할까요?

I also need the digital file.

디지털 파일도 필요합니다.

Can I receive it as a JPG?

JPG 파일로 받을 수 있나요?

Please follow the receiving authority's photo rules.

제출 기관의 사진 규정에 맞춰 주세요.

Can I receive the photos today?

오늘 바로 받을 수 있나요?

Before leaving the studio

  • Check the finished physical size.
  • Check that the number of prints matches what you paid for.
  • Open the digital file on your own phone.
  • Check the pixel dimensions if your application specifies them.
  • Confirm the file type.
  • Check that any editing of your face and background complies with the receiving authority's rules.
  • Keep the original official requirements until the application is accepted.

If you are submitting the photograph on the same day, test the digital file before leaving the area.

Fixing it while the studio still has your session open is easier than returning the following week.

The rule worth remembering

Do not begin with:

“Where is the cheapest passport photo booth?”

Begin with:

“What photograph does this particular application require?”

Then choose the easiest place that can produce that result.

For a straightforward Korean-size photograph, a self-service ID booth may be enough.

For a foreign passport, unusual dimensions, a baby, a previous rejection or a digital-file application, a staffed studio is usually easier.

The photograph is cheap compared with repeating an immigration or passport application because the file was the wrong size.

Korean passport and Residence Card specifications were checked on September 29, 2026. Korean passport photos are 3.5 × 4.5 cm with head length 3.2–3.6 cm; foreigner-registration photos use the same print size but publish a 2.5–3.5 cm face-length range.

U.S. passport rules are included as a concrete example of why foreign applicants should not simply request a Korean-format passport photo: the current U.S. printed size is 2 × 2 inches / 51 × 51 mm. UK digital-passport rules provide another example of a system where digital-file requirements are central.

Seoul city information documents the use of instant ID-photo machines at subway stations, but machine locations and capabilities can change. Search the current station or neighborhood before travelling and confirm that the machine offers the document format you need.

Studio-search terms, Korean request phrases, choice of staffed studio versus booth, and troubleshooting steps are editorial guidance. Individual photo studios control their own pricing, retouching, file-delivery and retention policies. Your passport authority, embassy, immigration office or other receiving institution controls whether the final photograph is accepted.
