Where to Dispose of Expired Medicine in Seoul: Boxes vs Postboxes

In Seoul, take expired or unwanted medicine to a designated medicine collection box. A postbox is another option for suitable solid medicines, but liquids and ointments belong in dedicated collection boxes. Identify the medicine's form before choosing where to take it.

Seoul's official disposal announcement, published 29 September 2025, says to leave tablets, capsules and dispensed medicines in their packaged, sealed state, and to close the lids of liquids, syrups and ointments before placing them in a medicine collection box. This guidance was checked on 25 October 2026. The publication date is not a claim that every collection location has remained unchanged.

Sort by form, not by the shop where you bought it

Make two small groups: solid medicine suitable for the postbox route, and liquid, ointment or other special-container medicine for a dedicated box. Keep containers closed and prevent leaks during transport. Do not empty unwanted medicine into a sink or put medicine into an ordinary volume-based rubbish bag; the city's announcement directs residents to separate collection.

Health supplements are a separate category. The same city announcement directs health functional foods, such as vitamin or omega-3 supplements, to general waste. If you cannot tell whether a product is a medicine or a supplement, show the package to a pharmacist or ask the collection facility before disposing of it. Do not decide from an English brand name alone.

Find a collection point you can actually use

Updated October 26, 2026 — map access: If the theme search gives no usable result, try the city’s direct medicine collection-box map. At this check, it loaded collection-point markers and an individual address/contact record. This check did not confirm a pharmacy QR sticker, current opening hours or on-site acceptance; contact the listed facility before travelling. This update adds a working map alternative without treating a map record as confirmation that a site is accepting medicine now.

  1. Open Smart Seoul Map, choose City Life Map (도시생활지도), then search for 폐의약품 using the theme-search box. Our 25 October 2026 check returned no usable collection-point result from this theme search. If no usable result appears, use a pharmacy's city-provided QR sticker or ask your district office or public health center for a collection point.
  2. Check the collection point's address and facility name. District offices, community centers and public health centers are among the locations listed in the city's guidance.
  3. If the box is inside a building, confirm access before travelling there. A map marker does not establish that the building is open now.
  4. Ask where the medicine collection box is when you arrive: “폐의약품 수거함이 어디에 있나요?”

The city also provides location QR stickers through pharmacies. A pharmacy displaying information about nearby boxes is not necessarily collecting medicine itself. Confirm acceptance with that pharmacy rather than leaving a bag at its door or counter.

Using a postbox for solid medicine

For the postbox route, seal the medicine in a bag or envelope and clearly write 폐의약품 on it. The city's illustrated collection guide, published 10 November 2023, describes the label, sealed packaging and map search. Those instructions were checked against the later city announcement on 25 October 2026. Do not open blister packs solely for disposal.

The Seoul Citizen Health Portal notice, published 3 July 2025, explicitly keeps liquids and ointments out of postboxes because they can contaminate mail. That restriction was checked on 25 October 2026. For a leaking bottle, unusual container or uncertain item, use the dedicated-box route after asking the facility how to hand it over.

Before leaving home

Check the route, package and destination together: correct medicine group, closed containers, a clearly marked outer bag for a postbox, and a confirmed collection point. Keep the package information available if staff need to identify the item. Questions about whether to stop taking a prescribed medicine should go to your prescriber or pharmacist. The separate guide to using a pharmacy in Korea covers obtaining medicine and communicating with pharmacy staff.

Outside Seoul, check your municipality's current instructions. The Seoul postbox arrangement should not be assumed to apply to every Korean city.
