Public Swimming Pools in Seoul: Day Passes, Booking, and Rules

A Seoul sports center can be open all afternoon while its pool has no public swimming session available. Before packing your goggles, look for 자유수영 (open swimming) and 일일입장 (single-session admission), not just the building's opening hours.

This guide covers indoor public sports-center pools: how to find a session, what to ask if Korean online registration does not work, and what to bring. Seasonal outdoor pools and hotel pools have separate arrangements.

Official information checked: September 23, 2026. The examples below are published schedules, not a guarantee of availability. Check the facility's latest closure notice and your exact date before traveling.

Start with the right kind of swimming ticket

“Free swimming” does not mean free admission. It means swimming independently rather than taking a lesson. A day ticket may cover one scheduled session, not a whole day or unlimited re-entry.

  • 자유수영 — open swimming: check whether it is available to occasional visitors or only registered members.
  • 일일입장 / 일일자유이용 — single-visit admission: the section to check when you want one swim.
  • 수영강습 / 수강신청 — lessons / course registration: a scheduled class, often with a monthly enrollment process.
  • 정기권 — recurring pass: read the permitted days and time slot before paying.
  • 휴관 / 마감 / 대기 — closed / full / waiting: none of these means a confirmed place.

A particularly easy mistake is seeing “open swimming” inside a lesson description. Mapo Art Center, for example, describes an independent-swimming session at the end of the month's lessons. That is not the same product as its separately listed public day admission. Source: Mapo Culture Foundation swimming programs.

Two Seoul pools that show why the details matter

Use these as starting points, not a ranking. Pick the one whose confirmed session fits your day. Names that sound similar may belong to different buildings.

Mapo Art Center: a walk-in day-admission example

Look for 마포아트센터. Its official program page lists weekday day swimming at 08:00–08:50 and 12:00–12:50, with an adult nonmember price of ₩3,500. It marks day admission as unavailable for internet registration and says tickets start 25 minutes before the session, first come, first served. Those conditions do not guarantee a place when you arrive. Check Mapo's day-swimming table.

The center lists the last Sunday of each month as a regular closure. For holiday exceptions or conflicting notices, contact the sports desk at 02-3274-8500 or 8501. Do not use the evening time on a recurring-pass row as proof that evening walk-in tickets are sold. Source: Mapo registration and facility-use guide.

Seoul Forest Complex Culture and Sports Center: online and on-site quotas

Look for 서울숲복합문화체육센터, not the separate Seongdong Community Sports Center. Its weekday 12:10–13:00 session is listed at ₩4,000 for adults, with 30 online and 30 on-site places. The stated ticketing window is 11:50–12:20. Same-day online sales are unavailable; on-site payment and ticketing use the kiosk beside the third-floor desk.

The guide also lists same-day cancellation/refund as unavailable. A standby number only helps if an unused place becomes available; it is not admission. Ask the desk at 02-2204-6600 about the exact session and current procedure. Source: Seoul Forest center's day-admission guide.

What these examples tell you: there is no useful “all Seoul pools work this way” booking instruction. One facility may sell the session at the desk; another may divide capacity between online reservations and walk-ins. A sold-out online allocation is a reason to ask about on-site availability, not a promise that walk-in tickets remain.

How to check a pool before leaving home

  1. Find the exact building. Search its Korean name and check the address. The Seoul Sports facility directory can help identify an operator, but its own notice advises confirming details with the facility.
  2. Open the operator's day-admission page. Find your sport, day, age group, and session. A leisure center's bowling or gym rules may appear above its swimming rules on the same page.
  3. Check the newest notices. Look for 공지사항 (notices), 휴관 (closure), and 공사 (construction). A special closure can override the normal timetable.
  4. Separate ticketing time from swimming time. Write down when sales start, when entry closes, and when you must leave the water. Ask whether shower/changing time is included.
  5. Confirm payment and identification. Ask whether you need an account, which ID is accepted, and whether your payment method works for that ticket.

For a first visit, save a screenshot showing the full facility name, session, and instructions. Arriving early can give you time to understand the process, but it cannot overcome a sold-out session.

Can a foreign visitor book without Korean phone verification?

The answer depends on the facility and ticket. The published day-admission examples above do not establish a citywide passport-only booking policy, nor do they guarantee acceptance of overseas cards.

If the website asks for Korean mobile identity verification, stop before buying an unrelated phone plan or creating another person's account. Ask whether that session has an on-site route and what identification the desk accepts. A passport, Residence Card, and proof of local address are different documents; do not assume they are interchangeable.

I'm a foreign national and cannot complete Korean mobile identity verification. Can I register on-site for this open-swim session? What identification do I need?

If you already live in Korea and the problem is your phone account, our Korea SIM guide for residents explains the verification issues to check. A working data connection alone should not be treated as proof that a booking site's identity check will succeed.

For monthly lessons, also check registration priority. Jongno's Olympic Memorial center lists different enrollment start dates for Jongno residents and residents of other districts. Ask which category applies to your address and which evidence is accepted; a district-priority window is a different issue from nationality or technical verification. What to pack, and what to leave out

Pack a swimming cap, swimming goggles, suitable swimwear, a towel, shower supplies, and a bag for wet items. Do not rely on rental gear or free towels without asking first.

Seoul Forest's published rules require a full soap shower before entering. They specify close-fitting swimwear, including fitted rash guards, and prohibit items such as fins, kickboards, snorkels, flotation vests, and tubes during open swimming. That rash-guard allowance should not be assumed at another pool. Source: Seoul Forest swimming precautions and packing list.

If you need more-covering swimwear, use a photo to ask about the particular garment before traveling. “Rash guards allowed?” may not settle questions about loose shorts, leggings, or a full outfit.

For a child, ask about age or height limits, the permitted pool, adult accompaniment, and acceptable age documentation. Access to the building does not establish access to every pool. For example, Seongdong Community Sports Center limits children aged 48 months or younger to its infant pool with a guardian and requires swim diapers. If you need a step-free route, pool-entry assistance, or a private changing space, confirm those needs directly. Seongdong Community Sports Center states that it does not have dedicated family/disability changing and shower facilities. Do not infer accessibility arrangements from the word “public.” Source: the center's accessibility information.

Your first visit: desk, changing room, then pool

At reception, show the session you want rather than asking only for “swimming.” Before paying, confirm the end time, refund conditions, and locker procedure. Keep your ticket until you have finished.

Ask where to leave outdoor shoes and whether a locker uses a key, wristband, number, or your own code. Put your phone away before entering shared changing and shower areas; do not photograph or film other users. Shower before putting on your swimwear and entering the pool, following the facility's posted instructions.

At the water, ask the lifeguard which lane matches your ability and what direction swimmers follow. Leave the wall clear for turns, avoid sudden stops in a busy lane, and follow instructions about breaks and closing time. Do not dive unless the facility expressly permits it.

Open swimming is not a beginner lesson. If you cannot swim safely in the available depth, ask about an appropriate supervised class instead. Do not plan around bringing a flotation aid that the facility may prohibit.

When the plan goes wrong

The building is open, but the pool will not admit you

Show the day-admission page and ask whether the issue is the session time, capacity, age eligibility, or a special closure. A gym reception desk being open does not mean public swimming is running. Ask for the next confirmed session before changing your travel plans.

The website says “full”

Check whether you are looking at a course, an online day-ticket quota, or the entire session. Ask whether separate on-site places or a standby procedure exist. Do not travel expecting a cancellation, and do not pay an unofficial reseller for someone else's membership.

The kiosk rejects your card

Ask staff which alternative payment methods that swimming session supports. Do not assume cash is accepted just because another service in the building accepts it. If a charge appears on your banking app but no ticket prints, show staff the transaction and check its status before paying again.

You arrive late or need to cancel

Ask whether admission is still valid and how much swimming time remains. Late entry does not automatically extend the session. For cancellation, use the operator's stated process promptly and retain the confirmation; do not assume unused day tickets roll over or share monthly-course refund rules.

Before you head out

Confirm six things: the exact pool, a visitor-eligible session, ticketing time, a workable payment route, accepted swimwear, and today's closure notices. That short check is more valuable than a long list of pools with unverified hours.

Once the session is confirmed, use our Seoul transit-card comparison to plan transport payment. Keep a backup activity nearby if the pool uses first-come admission; a queue or standby slip is not a reservation.

Fees, quotas, schedules, and admission procedures can change; the facility's current notice and staff confirmation govern your visit.
