A gym advertises “₩30,000 a month,” but the amount at the desk is ₩360,000 for a year, plus a locker. The offer may simply be an annual price divided by twelve—not a membership you can cancel after paying for one month. Before joining a gym in Korea, ask what you are buying and when the full amount is due.
Separate three decisions: access to the gym, personal training (PT), and optional extras. Get the start and end dates, full price, booking rules, and cancellation terms in writing. If you are new to the neighborhood or unsure how long you will stay, ask about a day pass or a short membership before committing to a long package.
Official information checked: September 22, 2026. Prices and enrollment requirements vary by facility. The refund examples below explain calculation methods; they are not a legal assessment or a guaranteed refund for an individual contract.
Can foreigners join a gym in Korea?
Start with the specific branch’s enrollment process rather than assuming you need the same documents everywhere. Ask whether it can register you with your passport or residence card, which contact details it needs, and whether its entry system requires a Korean phone number or an app.
Search a map app for 헬스장 (gym), 피트니스 (fitness), or PT near your home or workplace. Visit at the time you actually expect to train. An empty gym at 2 p.m. does not tell you how long the equipment queue will be after work.
Before paying, ask staff to demonstrate how you will enter, book a session, and contact reception. If phone verification fails, ask about manual registration or another entry method. Do not use someone else’s identity to get through the app. Our Korean SIM and identity-verification guide explains the wider phone-verification issue.
For a short visit, ask whether a 일일권 (day pass) includes showers, towels, and equipment access. Availability is branch-specific; do not arrive expecting every gym to sell one.
Compare the total cost, not the headline monthly price
The ₩30,000/₩360,000 example above is hypothetical, not a market-price estimate. Ask for a written quote with these items separated:
- Gym membership: the full contract price, exact dates, and any branch or time-of-day restrictions.
- Enrollment and taxes: any registration charge and whether the quoted total includes VAT where applicable.
- Extras: a personal locker, towels, workout clothes, parking, or access-card deposit.
- PT: session count, minutes per session, total cost, and whether ordinary gym access is included.
- Renewal: whether the contract ends automatically or bills again, and how to stop renewal.
Ask for the amount payable today and the total committed amount. “Monthly payment,” a recurring subscription, and credit-card installments for a prepaid annual contract are different arrangements. Paying an annual contract in installments does not turn it into twelve independent one-month contracts.
Check which cards work at the branch and in its recurring-payment system. Acceptance of an overseas card for one purchase does not prove that the app can store it for subscriptions. See our guide to paying in Korea for general payment preparation.
PT packages: confirm that the sessions fit your schedule
A low per-session price is not useful if the trainer has no space when you are free. Before buying a package, ask which trainer will teach you and whether your preferred weekly times are realistically available.
- How long is each session, and what counts toward that time?
- Is the package one-to-one PT or a small-group class?
- When do the sessions expire, and must they all be booked before that date?
- How much notice is needed to reschedule? What counts as a no-show?
- What happens if the trainer cancels, leaves, or cannot teach in the agreed language?
- Are introductory sessions genuinely included, and are any deducted from the package?
If you need English instruction, ask to meet the actual trainer rather than relying on the reception staff’s English. Ask about qualifications and experience relevant to your goals. A trainer’s availability and communication style are easier to assess in a trial session than in a sales conversation.
Keep your own session log: date, trainer, session used, cancellation, and remaining balance. If the app deducts a session incorrectly, take a screenshot and ask for correction promptly. Do not wait until the whole package is nearly expired.
Read these parts of the contract before signing
Request a copy you can read before paying. For a Korean-only contract, use translation to identify unclear clauses, then ask staff to explain and record the answer. A friendly verbal promise is harder to prove than a written term.
The government’s consumer-contract guidance recommends keeping written contracts and adding verbal promises as special terms. For your gym, record:
- The operator’s business name, branch, contact details, and the party taking payment.
- The membership and PT start dates, expiry dates, and any promotional extra period or sessions.
- Separate prices for bundled services and the refund calculation for each.
- Pause rules, transfer rules and fees, cancellation channels, and renewal notice requirements.
- Any promise that matters to your decision, such as a named trainer or a specific class schedule.
If gym access and PT are sold by different businesses, establish whom you must contact to cancel each. If payment is requested to a trainer’s personal account, ask how that payment will be recorded against your contract and obtain a receipt before proceeding.
Pausing a membership is not the same as canceling
홀딩 or 휴회 means a pause. 중도해지 means ending the contract early. Simply not attending is neither.
Before travel, a move, or another absence, ask whether a pause is available, how to request it, whether it has a fee, and whether it covers both the gym membership and PT. Obtain confirmation of the pause dates and the revised expiry date. Also ask whether recurring billing stops or only the access period moves.
The Korea Consumer Agency’s June 2026 fitness-dispute guidance includes a Pilates case in which an agreed pause mattered to the refund assessment. Keep the approval; do not assume a pause request was accepted just because you sent it.
How to check a gym cancellation calculation
Ask for an itemized calculation showing the amount paid, contract period or session count, used portion, penalty, other deductions, and proposed refund. A message saying “nothing remains” is not enough to check the arithmetic.
Easy Law’s sports-facility guidance sets out statutory default return rules where the relevant refund arrangements have not been agreed. For a customer’s personal-reason cancellation, its table deducts 10% before the start, or the used portion plus 10% after the start. Time-based and session-based contracts are calculated differently. Other consumer-protection rules may also affect an agreed clause; signing it does not settle every question.
A simple time-based example
Assume a fully paid ₩300,000 membership, a 90-day contract, and 30 chargeable days elapsed. With no separate extras or disputed pause:
- Used portion: ₩300,000 × 30 ÷ 90 = ₩100,000.
- 10% penalty: ₩30,000.
- Illustrative refund: ₩300,000 − ₩100,000 − ₩30,000 = ₩170,000.
This is an illustration of that method, not a quote. For a time-based membership, check elapsed contract days—not just the number of visits. Confirm the start date, cancellation-receipt date, and any approved pause before calculating.
PT: check the agreed package price
In the KCA’s published PT example, a ₩1,500,000 contract covered 30 sessions, with 12 used. The calculation used ₩50,000 per session from the actual package price, not the gym’s higher ₩70,000 “regular” rate. After ₩600,000 for sessions and a ₩150,000 penalty, the refund was ₩750,000. This is a case outcome, not a universal PT quotation.
A separate KCA gym decision published in 2025 rejected a clause recalculating discounted membership use at a higher regular rate. If that happens to you, request the contractual and legal basis for the deduction and have a consumer counselor review it.
Do not automatically apply the customer-cancellation penalty when the gym has failed to provide the agreed service. Closure and operator responsibility can lead to different treatment. Ask for an assessment of the reason for cancellation as well as the numbers.
Send a cancellation request you can prove
Use the contract’s cancellation channel and retain evidence of sending and receipt. If you first speak at reception, follow up through a documented channel the business uses. Identify the membership and PT separately; canceling one may leave the other active.

This asks to end the selected contract, confirm the date received, itemize deductions and the refund, provide a payment date, and confirm the status of automatic billing. Add a brief factual explanation if the gym’s conduct is the reason you are canceling.
Save the response and check the next statement. Removing an app or blocking a card is not, by itself, proof that the underlying membership was canceled. If the gym does not acknowledge the request, seek advice about a more formal notice rather than letting the request remain undocumented.
If the gym closes, stops responding, or refuses a refund
Save the contract, receipts, advertisements, booking history, pause approvals, cancellation request, and any closure notice. Keep a dated record of contact attempts. Contact the named operator, not only your trainer, and request a written response.
Contact your card issuer promptly if you paid by card. The KCA guidance highlights installment-payment defenses for qualifying purchases of at least ₩200,000 over three or more monthly installments when service fails. Ask your issuer whether your transaction qualifies and how to submit evidence. This is not an automatic refund of money already paid; overseas-issued cards may follow different dispute procedures.
Do not simply stop paying your card bill without the issuer’s instructions. For a one-time card payment, ask what dispute route is available. A bank transfer or cash payment will not have the same card-payment route, but retain the evidence and seek consumer advice.
The KCA counseling page lists 1372 without an area code, weekdays 09:00–18:00 excluding 12:00–13:00; caller charges apply. It also links to internet counseling. Arrange Korean-language assistance if needed rather than assuming an English-speaking adviser will answer. Ask which further redress process is appropriate if discussion with the gym fails.
A consumer complaint does not guarantee recovery, especially if a business has no available funds. Avoid paying another fee merely to “unlock” an unexplained refund.
Useful Korean questions at the front desk
“PT 없이 헬스장만 이용할 수 있나요?”
“Can I use the gym without buying PT?”
“이 가격이 총 결제금액인가요? 추가 비용이 있나요?”
“Is this the total amount payable? Are there extra charges?”
“한국 휴대폰 번호 없이도 등록하고 입장할 수 있나요?”
“Can I register and enter without a Korean mobile number?”
“중도해지하면 환급액을 어떻게 계산하나요?”
“How is the refund calculated if I cancel early?”
Choose the membership you can actually use, not the largest discount you can obtain. A workable schedule, a clear contract, and an entry method you have tested are more useful than extra months you may never use.
