The National Museum of Korea's permanent galleries are free, but a free visit does not mean every space is open or every experience is available without booking. Special exhibitions have their own admission terms, and the free Children's Museum requires an online session reservation. Decide which part you want to visit before arranging your day.
Official information checked October 17, 2026 (Korea Standard Time). This guide concerns the National Museum of Korea in Yongsan, Seoul. Hours, reservation rules, exhibitions, and temporary closures can change. Recheck the linked museum notices for your visit date.
Check the current gallery closures first
As of October 17, 2026, selected galleries remain closed for renovation through January 28, 2027. The museum's renovation notice and detailed room schedule distinguish July 6 closures for Buddhist paintings, wood and lacquer crafts, Buddhist sculpture, metal crafts, and the Room of Senses from August 10 closures for parts of calligraphy and painting. Read the room list before choosing a must-see object or theme, and confirm the announced January 29 reopening before traveling.
A separate Central Asia Gallery notice, published September 28 and checked October 17, closes Room 307 from October 12–22, 2026 and announces October 23 as its reopening date. This is a room closure, not a statement that the whole museum is closed. Treat an announced reopening as something to confirm again before traveling.
Separate free admission from tickets and reservations
The official visitor-information page, checked October 17, 2026, distinguishes free permanent exhibition halls and the Children's Museum from special exhibitions, which may be free or charged. A ticket for one exhibition does not establish access to a different exhibition or a children's session.
- Permanent galleries: start with the current opening and closure notices, then plan around the galleries you actually want to see.
- A named special exhibition: open its official listing and check its dates, venue, price, ticket route, and any time-slot conditions before paying.
- Children's Museum: reserve a session online and keep the confirmed mobile ticket. Free admission still requires that reservation.
A general “museum ticket” from a reseller may describe a tour or another service. Read what it includes before deciding whether you need it. An exhibition poster establishes the exhibition period, not the availability of a seat or ticket for your preferred day.
Main museum hours and children's sessions are different
On the official hours page checked October 17, 2026, regular hours are 09:30–17:30 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday, and 09:30–21:00 on Wednesday and Saturday. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing. Check the closed-day section and temporary notices as well; a weekday's regular schedule does not override a dated closure.
The Children's Museum uses daytime sessions. Its hours notice effective March 16, 2026, checked October 17, lists five sessions, with the final one running 16:00–17:20. The main museum's Wednesday or Saturday evening opening therefore is not a children's evening session.
How to reserve the Children's Museum
Use the official Children's Museum reservation page. Its individual-reservation rules, checked October 17, 2026, require online booking and say there is no telephone reservation or on-site ticketing. Bookings open at 00:00 fourteen days before the visit; follow the site's server-time information.
- Choose the date and session that your family can realistically reach.
- Include all visitors, including toddlers under 36 months. The individual booking limit is five people. Children must accompany adult guardians; adults without children are restricted.
- Complete the reservation and save the confirmed mobile ticket. Reaching the booking page or selecting a session is not confirmation.
- Arrive before the session starts. The rules say a reservation cancels automatically after 30 minutes without entry, and a no-show can restrict reservations for 60 days. Cancel by the session start if your plans change.
The reservation page requires login. An English interface alone does not establish that every overseas phone or registration route will work. If you cannot complete the required account step, contact the Children's Museum through the number on that page before travel. A general-gallery visit is a possible fallback, subject to its current notices; it does not replace a children's reservation.
Allow time for the approach and check outdoor notices
The museum's official subway directions, checked October 17, 2026, direct visitors to Ichon Station and Exit 2. Save the museum's Korean name, 국립중앙박물관, and address, 137 Seobinggo-ro, Yongsan-gu. Allow time between arriving at the station and reaching the entrance; do not schedule a children's session at your train's arrival time.
A recent official outdoor-access notice, published October 12 and checked October 17, covered part of the Mirror Pond plaza on October 11–15 and the plaza, south entrance, and parts of the outdoor garden on October 16. Those stated dates have passed. Recheck current museum notices and follow posted routes if your plan includes the grounds.
Build a flexible museum day
Choose one or two gallery themes, verify those rooms, and leave time for a break. If the room that motivated your visit is closed, choose another open section or move the visit to a later date after confirming reopening. For arrival-day timing, our Seoul arrival-day guide explains why a fixed reservation immediately after landing needs a generous margin.
Korea Trip Planner helps organize editable days by city, dates, interests, and pace. Put any confirmed session or exhibition time into your plan and verify navigation separately; the planner does not book admission or confirm live opening hours.
If an exhibition or cultural event interests you, Korea Now can help browse covered listings by date, region, and category. Open the organizer's source afterward for the exact programme and ticket conditions. For a wider trip, Korea Explorer compares regional context before you choose places; it is an editorial selector, not live navigation.
