Seoul’s municipal tap water, Arisu, is supplied as drinking water. If you are unsure about the water coming out of your apartment’s tap, ask about the building’s pipes and water tank and request Seoul’s free household water-quality check before buying a filter. The city’s Arisu Quality Verification System specifically addresses concerns about indoor plumbing and tanks. This guide covers homes connected to Seoul’s municipal supply; it does not establish the condition of a particular tap or apply automatically to private wells or other cities. Official service information checked October 17, 2026.
Start with your building, not a shopping list
When you move into an unfamiliar apartment, ask the landlord or management office where the water comes from and whether there has been recent plumbing work, a supply interruption, or a water-quality notice. Ask who handles indoor pipe repairs and, if the building uses a shared tank, when it was last inspected and cleaned.
Keep a short record of the concern: which tap, when it began, whether it happens with cold water, and whether other taps or neighboring units have the same problem. A photo of visible discoloration and a dated message to management can help explain what happened. These observations help a technician investigate; they do not identify a contaminant.
Seoul’s indoor pipe replacement information recognizes rusty water from old household pipes as a problem that may need repairs. Its English page includes older program figures and targets, so ask the waterworks office for current eligibility and funding before anyone approves work. How to ask for a free water-quality test in Seoul
The city’s household testing service is described as free for all Seoul households. The basic visit checks residual chlorine, turbidity, pH, iron, and copper. The city describes additional testing when basic results do not meet its guidelines, followed by advice on corrective action. A basic check is not a test for every possible substance. - Prepare your address and access details. Keep the Korean road-name address, apartment building and unit, a callback number, and times someone can be home. Our guide to writing a Korean address explains the difference between the street building number and your apartment details.
- Ask for 아리수 품질확인제. Start from the official service page linked above. It links to the city’s online application portal. If the form or customer-number lookup is confusing, use the phone help route below and ask which waterworks office serves your address.
- Explain the exact concern. Say whether you are requesting reassurance after moving in or reporting a new change in the water. Ask what the visit will cover and whether your concern needs additional testing.
- Confirm the appointment. Ask who will contact you, whether management needs to provide access, and how results will be explained. Ask about language assistance when arranging the visit; English interpretation at the call center does not guarantee an English-speaking technician.
- Keep the result and next steps. Ask which tap was sampled, what was tested, and whether a follow-up or building repair is needed. Share relevant findings with the landlord or management office and agree who will arrange the work.
The official online civil-service portal says applications can be made without membership login. It also displays customer-number lookup fields; it does not establish that every applicant can finish every service without additional information. If your water is billed through building management, ask the help desk how to proceed. Portal checked October 17, 2026.
English help and useful Korean phrases
Seoul Water’s English website lists Dasan 120 foreign-language support on weekdays, Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–6 p.m., excluding public holidays. Its menu directs callers to press 9, then 1 for English; the listed Seoul contact is 02-120. Follow the current voice menu if it changes. Hours and menu checked October 17, 2026, Korea time.

Chlorine taste, filters, and what they can tell you
Seoul Water explains that chlorination disinfects the supply and can affect its smell. That explanation should not be used to dismiss an unusual new odor in your home. Report a change rather than trying to diagnose it from a description online. Official explanation checked October 17, 2026.
For water already established as suitable to drink, the city’s taste tips include letting the tap run briefly and chilling water in a glass or ceramic container. These are taste suggestions, not a method for making suspect water safe. Checked October 17, 2026.
Choose a filter for a defined purpose. The CDC’s home-filter guidance explains that taste, smell, and appearance alone do not establish safety, that many pitcher and refrigerator filters are not designed to remove germs, and that products need maintenance. Check the specific removal claims and replacement schedule. A shower filter changing color is not a laboratory report of your drinking water. CDC page dated April 10, 2024; checked October 17, 2026.
What if the water changes suddenly?
If the water is newly discolored, contains visible debris, has an unusual odor, or is covered by a local advisory, pause using it for drinking and cooking while you contact management and the waterworks office. Use a known safe alternative and follow the office’s instructions about which uses are affected and when normal use can resume. Ask about recent supply or building work, but do not assume that work explains the problem.
For a short hotel or dormitory stay, ask reception or the facility manager to investigate and arrange drinking water. For a home outside Seoul, contact the local water utility about its own testing service. Seoul’s household program and phone instructions should not be treated as nationwide rules.
The useful sequence is to identify the supply, explain the concern, obtain the right test or official advice, and resolve any building problem. You can then decide whether a filter adds something you actually need.
