A Temple Food Cooking Class in Seoul: What to Bring and How to Participate

Choose a designated English-interpreted class and read its packing list before attending the Korean Temple Food Center. This is a practical group cooking session: you may need reusable containers and dishcloths, and time is set aside for packing and cleanup as well as cooking.

Updated October 26, 2026 — session availability: At this check, the November 27 schedule showed 16 / 16 participants and “Waiting,” although its overview said “Open.” Check the individual session status and confirm whether you can register before arranging your visit; the overview alone does not guarantee a place. This update clarifies current capacity. The November 27 instructions below remain a session-specific packing and participation example.

Match the language and menu to your needs

Use the center's official short-term experience list to select an actual date and menu. The English website alone does not establish the teaching language. The center says English interpretation is provided for designated programs. Program list and conditions checked October 18, 2026; each class has separate dates and requirements.

Ask: “Is English interpretation included in this specific session?” If you need to avoid an ingredient, name it and ask about the complete menu and preparation before registering. Do not assume that the cultural description of temple food answers every allergy or dietary question.

Choose a menu you would like to learn to make, rather than simply the first available date. Look at the number of dishes and consider what you can carry afterward. Ask how much hands-on work is included if that is important to you.

Use the class instructions as your packing list

For example, the November 27, 2026 class asks participants to arrive ten minutes early and bring two dishcloths, a bag for used wet cloths, a pen, and one 600 ml container per dish. It provides aprons and asks participants to take prepared food home; disposable items are not supplied. This example is for the November 27 session, checked October 18, 2026; follow your own class page if it differs.

Test the lids on your containers and bring a bag that keeps them upright. Check your plans after class so you are not carrying food through a long sequence of unrelated stops. Ask the instructor for storage and eating instructions for the dishes you actually prepare; do not apply a generic fermentation timetable.

Check the venue on your chosen class page. The November 27 example lists 2F, Anguk Building, 39 Yulgok-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, near Anguk Station Exit 1. Use the class location rather than the website's general footer address. Example-session location checked October 18, 2026.

Cook as part of the group

The same session begins with a monastic instructor's demonstration, followed by cooking in groups of four. Cooking, packing, and cleanup must fit within the scheduled period. People who register separately but want to cook together are asked to leave a note. Session format checked October 18, 2026.

Watch the demonstration before taking over a task. In your group, ask who will measure, prepare ingredients, and keep track of the instructions. Let each person take part. If you miss a step, ask for clarification before adding an ingredient that affects everyone's food.

Pay attention to the sequence and the instructor's explanation of ingredients. Useful questions are: “What should I notice at this stage?” and “Which part of this step changes the texture?” These help you learn the method without turning the session into a race to finish.

Keep photography within the stated limits

The November 27 instructions prohibit video recording and allow photos only when other participants are not included. Photography conditions on the official class page, checked October 18, 2026.

Put your phone away during instructions and ask before taking a picture of your work. Do not assume that a cooking demonstration is permission to record the teacher. Before leaving, finish cleanup, check your containers, and keep the recipe notes with the names of the dishes. That makes the experience easier to continue in your own kitchen.
