Parking a rental car in Korea can feel harder than driving it. Underground garages may combine pillars, ramps, assigned spaces, EV chargers, compact-car bays, and tight door clearance in one busy area.
The small blue foam blocks sometimes attached to Korean car doors are door-edge guards. They can reduce light contact at the edge of a door, but they are not a traffic rule, a substitute for careful parking, or permission to touch the next vehicle.
- Use a marked space that matches your vehicle and permission.
- Check signs for resident-only, compact-car, accessible, EV, loading, or reserved parking.
- Center the car before opening the doors.
- Let passengers out first when a pillar or neighboring car leaves little room.
- Photograph the parked rental car and nearby existing damage when the space is unusually tight.
- If contact occurs, notify the rental company and follow its accident or damage procedure.

Why a legal parking space can still feel tight
Under the current Korean Parking Lot Act enforcement rule, a standard non-parallel parking space is at least 2.5 meters wide and 5.0 meters long. An expanded space is at least 2.6 meters wide and 5.2 meters long. Those figures describe the marked parking unit; they do not guarantee generous door clearance beside every wall, pillar, protective barrier, or neighboring vehicle. Older facilities may also have been built under earlier requirements.
A wide SUV, a large suitcase, a child seat, or a passenger who needs more opening space can therefore change which bay is practical. If a spot feels too tight, use another legal space rather than placing the car over a line.
What the blue door guard does
A foam or rubber guard sits on the outer edge of a door. Its limited job is to cushion the edge during very light contact. Similar products may be clear, body-colored, clipped on, or attached with adhesive.
Do not build a cultural story around the accessory. Some owners use it, some remove it, and many cars have none. For a rental driver, the useful lesson is simply that door clearance matters in dense parking areas.
Read the space before entering it
- 경차 — Compact-car space. Do not use it with a vehicle that does not qualify.
- 장애인전용 — Accessible parking. A valid permit is required.
- 전기차 or a charger symbol — EV-related space. Read whether it is for charging, parking, or both.
- 거주자우선 — Resident-priority or assigned parking.
- 방문차량 — Visitor vehicle area or visitor registration.
- 주차금지 — No parking.
Paint colors, signs, and access rules can vary. The written sign and facility instructions take priority over assumptions based on color alone.
Reverse-in or nose-in?
There is no single parking orientation that applies to every Korean garage. Follow arrows, wheel stops, wall notices, and the layout of neighboring vehicles. Some locations favor reverse-in parking for a forward exit. Others display a front-in request near buildings or landscaping.
If the Korean wording is unclear, look for the diagram:
- 후면주차 — Reverse the rear of the vehicle into the space.
- 전면주차 — Enter with the front of the vehicle toward the end of the space.
Do not copy one parked car when the posted sign says otherwise.
A low-risk routine for tight garages
- Slow down before the ramp or gate. Check the height limit and lane direction.
- Choose the bay, not just the nearest opening. Avoid a pillar-side spot if passengers or luggage need more room.
- Let passengers exit early. This is easier than trying to open every door after the car is centered.
- Fold mirrors only when necessary. Remember to reopen them before driving.
- Use the camera and mirrors together. A reversing camera does not show every pillar edge, wheel stop, or low obstacle.
- Center the vehicle. Check both lines before switching off.
- Open one door slowly. Hold the edge rather than letting wind or a slope pull it outward.
- Save the location. Photograph the floor, zone, pillar number, or nearest elevator entrance.
If your door touches another car
Stop and check both vehicles. For a rental car, photograph the location and contact the rental company using the number or procedure in the rental agreement. If another vehicle may be damaged, use the garage management or security contact and follow the rental company's instructions. Do not polish, repair, or make a private payment before the rental company explains the required process.

Finding public parking
Search 공영주차장 in Naver Map or KakaoMap for a public parking lot, then check the entrance sign for hours, rates, vehicle restrictions, and payment methods. For hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, and attractions, confirm parking before arrival rather than assuming that a listing includes a private space.
