Going to a Cinema in Korea: Subtitles, Age Ratings, Tickets, and Refunds

An English booking screen does not mean the film will have English subtitles. Before choosing a seat in a Korean cinema, check the movie, screening version, cinema branch, and language information together.

Read the screening version, not only the film title

Look for 자막 for a subtitled version and 더빙 for a dubbed version. These labels do not, on their own, tell you that the subtitles or dubbing are English. For an English-subtitled Korean film, look for an explicit English-subtitle notice such as 영어자막, and confirm the particular session.

A film originally spoken in English may be manageable for an English speaker, while dialogue in other languages can still have only Korean subtitles. Watch out for mixed-language films and Korean-dubbed family screenings. If a language detail determines whether you can enjoy the film, ask the cinema before paying.

Check the branch and format before the seat map

Compare the exact cinema address with your travel plan. A district name in the branch title may not mean the cinema is beside the station exit you expected. Check the auditorium format and price rather than assuming every showing is an ordinary 2D screening.

Choose seats based on the actual map. For wheelchair access, companion seating, hearing assistance, or another essential need, ask the branch what is available for that auditorium and session. A lift in the shopping centre does not answer every auditorium-access question.

Take the age rating seriously

The CGV customer FAQ explains its admission checks for age-rated films, including guardian conditions for some ratings and stricter adult-only restrictions. The Korea Media Rating Board’s current classification guide allows below-age admission to 12- and 15-rated films when accompanied by a guardian. That exception does not apply to 청소년관람불가 (youth-restricted) films. Confirm the cinema’s guardian and identification checks for your screening.

CGV’s current FAQ lists passports among the accepted documents for its age checks. Bring your original passport if using it for verification; for another cinema, confirm that operator’s accepted identification before travelling. Do not rely on a photograph, edited screenshot, or another person's ID. Confirm before buying a non-refundable journey to the venue.

A card notification is not your ticket

After purchase, open the confirmed booking and check the branch, date, start time, seats, and booking number. Keep the actual ticket or collection instructions available. If the seller charged the card but no booking appears, check the order history and contact support before paying a second time.

For guest bookings, retain the details required to retrieve or cancel the order. Keep them private. When collecting at a kiosk, ask staff if the supported language or identification step is unclear instead of entering multiple unrelated phone numbers.

Cancel before your channel’s deadline

The CGV cancellation FAQ says its website/app online cancellation closes twenty minutes before the screening starts and requires cancellation of the whole booking, rather than only some seats. Once a ticket has been printed, cancellation requires a visit to the cinema before the screening starts. SUITE CINEMA, PRIVATE BOX and some event programs have no same-day cancellation or changes. These are CGV-specific conditions; read the terms for your exact product and seller.

If your plan changes, open the cancellation screen promptly and check its final confirmation. Deleting a ticket screenshot does not cancel the purchase. If the online deadline has passed, check whether an eligible before-start cancellation at the cinema remains possible; do not assume a missed screening is refundable. CGV’s customer center cannot cancel, change or refund tickets for you.

Arrive with time to find the auditorium and resolve a language or ticket issue before the film begins. That small margin is more useful than trying to troubleshoot from a dark aisle after the opening scene.

November 1 is the verification and edit date, not a new rule’s effective date. For a time-sensitive application, booking, or safety issue, confirm the current conditions with the responsible provider.
