If your phone joins Public WiFi Free in Korea but cannot get online, open the phone's default browser and complete the public Wi-Fi start page. If it disconnects after an hour, reconnect: the official service FAQ says Public WiFi Free sessions end after one hour, with no limit on reconnecting. See the NIA service instructions and official FAQ (checked October 11, 2026; neither page states an effective date).
This guide covers the national Public WiFi Free and Public WiFi Secure networks. Use the instructions displayed at your location for a differently named city, café, hotel, or carrier network.
Connect to Public WiFi Free in four steps
- Open your phone's Wi-Fi settings and look for Public WiFi Free. Confirm the network with the facility's sign or staff rather than choosing an unfamiliar lookalike.
- Select the network. A Wi-Fi icon alone does not confirm that internet access is ready.
- Open your default browser if the connection page does not appear automatically.
- On the Public WiFi page, select the button labeled 공공와이파이 이용하기 (“Use public Wi-Fi”), then try opening an ordinary webpage.
These steps follow NIA's connection guide (checked October 11, 2026; no effective date stated). Its illustrations place the button differently across devices, so follow the label rather than a fixed screen position.
Does Public WiFi Secure need your own account?
NIA lists wifi as both the username and password for Public WiFi Secure. Its secure connection guide says this network encrypts the wireless connection and does not require the Free network's browser start page. It is not offered at every public Wi-Fi location (checked October 11, 2026; no effective date stated).
Choose Secure only where the facility identifies it as its public network. Follow the official device-specific instructions linked above. Android authentication and certificate fields differ from iPhone screens; a generic password box is not the whole setup. If your screen or certificate details do not match the official guide, ask the facility or service support before accepting them.
Why does it disconnect or become slow?
- It stops after about an hour: repeat the Free network's connection procedure. The one-hour session limit is not a one-hour daily allowance.
- It works in one corner but not another: move closer to the public Wi-Fi access point or signed service area. Coverage does not necessarily extend across the whole building.
- It slows down in a crowd: congestion and heavy traffic can reduce quality. Repeatedly entering the same credentials may not solve that problem.
The time limit, coverage limits, and congestion explanation come from the official FAQ (checked October 11, 2026; no effective date stated). If reconnecting still fails, note the location, network name, time, and error message for support. Avoid a broad phone network reset or deleting unrelated profiles just to fix one hotspot.
Find a hotspot and keep a backup
The official public Wi-Fi portal offers a Korean location-search interface with city or province, district, and place-name fields. Its ENG option provides English service information (interface checked October 20, 2026). If you cannot find the hotspot you need, ask the facility before relying on it. A listed location is a place to check, not a guarantee of reception on arrival.
Save your accommodation address and next route while connected. If you need dependable access between hotspots, compare the options in our Korea SIM, eSIM, and pocket WiFi guide.
Use public Wi-Fi with sensible limits
NIA advises using networks with a known provider and avoiding sensitive activity on unsecured Wi-Fi, including financial transactions, company work, logins, and personal-data entry. Encryption on Secure does not prevent phishing. Read its safety guidance (checked October 11, 2026; no effective date stated).
You can ask staff: 공공와이파이 접속 화면이 안 떠요. — “The public Wi-Fi connection page isn't appearing.” Show the network name and error, without revealing private messages or passwords.
Prepared October 11, 2026. Official pages were checked directly on that date. Device menus and local networks can differ; the steps above do not claim a personal connection test.
