How to Use a Laundromat in Korea: Payment, Detergent, and Dryers

You have a bag of laundry, an unfamiliar payment screen and two rows of numbered machines. The first thing to do is not insert money. Check which machine you need, whether detergent is included and how drying is charged.

Using a self-service laundromat in Korea is manageable without fluent Korean, but the machines and payment systems are not identical everywhere. This guide covers doing the laundry yourself at a 셀프빨래방 or 코인빨래방, not dropping clothing off for professional cleaning.

At a glance: check the garment labels and shop rules, choose a washer, confirm the detergent arrangement, pay for the correct machine and start it. When washing finishes, move suitable items to a dryer and pay for drying separately unless the displayed package explicitly includes it. Keep a clean bag ready for the trip home.

Find a laundromat you can actually use

Search Naver Map or KakaoMap for 셀프빨래방 plus your neighborhood. Check recent interior photos for a payment kiosk, machine instructions, stairs and space to handle a bulky bag. A place listed as 세탁소 may be a staffed cleaner rather than a self-service laundry.

Confirm opening hours for the specific branch. “Unmanned” does not mean that someone can answer a call at any hour, and a 24-hour sign is not a promise of round-the-clock staffed assistance. If this is your first visit, going when the posted support contact is available makes troubleshooting easier.

For map setup and translating a notice, see our Korea travel apps guide. Translate a short section at a time and compare the machine number, price and temperature with the original screen; do not let a translated overlay hide the payment total.

What to bring—and what to leave out

Bring a charged phone, a way to pay that the branch accepts, and a separate clean bag for finished laundry. Sort items before arriving so you are not working out which clothes can share a cycle beside the payment kiosk. Check pockets for tissues, coins, pens and lighters.

Read the garment's washing and drying instructions separately. A garment that can be washed in water is not necessarily suitable for a tumble dryer. GINETEX's official care-symbol guide explains the square-with-circle tumble-drying symbol, restrictions on drying and the distinction between home washing and professional care. If a label is missing or unclear on a valuable item, ask a professional cleaner rather than guessing.

Check the shop's prohibited-item notice before loading anything unusual. For example, Wash Pang Pang's official user guide excludes dry-clean-only and non-water-washable items, pet goods, vehicle-related items and heavily contaminated laundry from its ordinary washers. It also describes separate shoe equipment. These are that operator's rules, not evidence that every branch of every chain offers the same machines.

For pet bedding, shoes, rugs, waterproof items or electric blankets, obtain explicit confirmation that both the shop and the item's care instructions permit the process. A larger drum does not make an unsuitable item washable.

Understand the payment screen before loading

You may encounter coin-operated machines, a central kiosk or a store-specific prepaid system. Wash Pang Pang's instructions explicitly describe coin or kiosk payment. KLC also offers a laundromat kiosk with membership top-ups and payment features. Neither example guarantees the options installed at your branch.

Before paying, distinguish these labels:

  • 세탁기 / 건조기 — washer / dryer. Match the number on the machine with the one on screen.
  • 결제 / 충전 — payment / adding prepaid credit. Adding credit may not start a machine.
  • 현금 / 카드 — cash / card. A card option is not a guarantee that your overseas-issued card will work.
  • 비회원 — non-member. Look for this option if offered; it is not available on every system.
  • 추가 / 취소 — add / cancel. Check what you are adding or cancelling before pressing either.

If registration asks for a Korean number you do not have, look for a listed guest-payment route or ask the operator. Do not enter a random number. If the only usable route requires registration you cannot complete, choose another laundry before loading or paying.

For a coin machine, follow its stated denomination and check whether a working change machine is available. For prepaid credit, check the minimum top-up, where the balance can be used and the refund terms before loading more than you need. Do not assume it works at another branch—or that T-money is accepted just because the machine has a card reader.

If a foreign card fails, check whether the first attempt was charged before trying another method. Our guide to paying in Korea with cash and cards covers backup options and unattended-terminal problems.

Do Korean laundromats provide detergent?

Some do. KLC's official WashEnjoy overview lists automatic detergent and fabric-softener dispensing as part of its system. Treat that as a reason to check the machine, not as permission to assume all laundromats work the same way.

Look for 세제 자동 투입 (automatic detergent dispensing) and 섬유유연제 (fabric softener). If detergent is automatically supplied, do not add your own pod or liquid unless the operator's instructions specifically allow it. If manual detergent is required, follow the posted product, compartment and dose instructions; do not improvise with dishwashing liquid.

세제가 자동으로 들어가나요? 따로 넣어야 하나요?
Is detergent added automatically, or do I need to add it separately?

If you need fragrance-free washing or must avoid softener, ask whether the selected program can meet that requirement before paying. A shared machine is not a guarantee of a residue-free wash. Dryer sheets are a different product from washing detergent; only use them if permitted and suitable for your items.

Start the washer without paying for the wrong machine

  1. Inspect the available washer. Check that it is empty and not marked out of service. If there is debris, a spill or an unusual smell, contact the operator or choose another machine.
  2. Match the load to the posted capacity. Follow the machine's fill guidance. Do not force a large duvet into a smaller drum just because the door can close.
  3. Choose a suitable course. 표준 means standard, 찬물 cold water, 온수 warm/hot water, and 추가 헹굼 extra rinse. Check the displayed temperature and garment instructions, not just a “premium” label.
  4. Confirm the detergent arrangement and close the door. Make sure no fabric is caught in the opening. Follow that model's closing instructions.
  5. Pay for the matching machine and course. Read the final number and amount once more. Follow any instruction to press 시작 (Start) on the machine afterward.
  6. Check that the cycle begins. Stay until the display and machine show that it is running. Note the finish time and set a reminder.

Take a quick photo of the machine number and receipt for your own records. Do not try to force a locked washer open to add a forgotten sock. A paid cycle and a locked door are not problems to solve by pulling harder.

Choose dryer settings for the clothes, not the shortest visit

Before transferring the load, remove anything that cannot be tumble-dried. Check that the dryer is empty, choose the correct numbered drum and read its load and heat instructions. On stacked dryers, the upper and lower drums may have separate numbers and controls.

저온 / 중온 / 고온 mean low / medium / high heat. Low heat is not a workaround for a “do not tumble dry” label. If the required drying conditions are unavailable, take that item home to dry as directed or use a suitable professional service.

A dryer needs room for the load to move. If a duvet is tightly bundled or a drum is packed, correct the load rather than immediately buying more time. Wash Pang Pang warns that overloading can leave laundry incompletely dried and that high heat may shrink or deform textiles. Follow the machine's instructions for pausing, rearranging bedding and adding time, and be careful around hot surfaces.

After the cycle, check thick seams and the middle of bedding, not only the warm outer surface. If an otherwise suitable load is still damp, separate tangled items and use an allowed extension or another suitable drying method. Do not seal damp laundry in a bag and assume the heat will finish drying it.

Leave maintenance to the operator. The U.S. Fire Administration's dryer-safety guidance emphasizes lint-filter and vent maintenance. In a commercial laundry, report a missing filter or visible maintenance problem; do not open service panels or work behind the machine.

How much money and time should you allow?

Read the branch's tariff for the washer size and course, the dryer's starting charge and any extra-time increment. Add detergent or a bag only if they are separately required. A membership top-up is money loaded into an account, not necessarily the cost of the wash.

Illustrative calculation, not a quoted market price: a ₩5,000 wash plus ₩4,000 drying and two ₩500 extensions would total ₩10,000. Use the same calculation with the prices on your machine before paying.

For timing, add the displayed wash duration, transfer time, the chosen drying period and a buffer for waiting or extra drying. On a first visit, keep roughly 90 minutes free as a planning allowance, not a guaranteed finish time. Bulky bedding and a busy branch can take longer. Avoid making your first attempt immediately before checkout or the last train.

When payment or a machine does not work

You paid, but nothing starts

Check whether you purchased credit rather than a cycle, selected the correct machine, closed the door and completed the displayed Start step. If the correct machine still does not run, photograph the screen and contact the posted support number before paying again. Include the branch, machine number, amount and time. Never send your full card number or security code.

3번 세탁기에 결제했는데 작동하지 않아요. 결제 시각은 오후 2시 10분이고, 금액은 5,000원입니다. 확인 부탁드립니다.
I paid for washer 3, but it is not running. The payment was at 2:10 p.m. for ₩5,000. Could you check it?

Replace the example number, time and amount with your own. If you selected the wrong machine, tell the operator immediately. Do not start it empty or interrupt someone else's cycle to try to recover the payment.

The washer stops or the door stays locked

Record the error code and follow only the customer instructions on the machine. A fault, water remaining inside or an unfinished cycle needs operator assistance. Do not unplug commercial equipment, open panels, force a latch or try instructions intended for a technician. If there is leaking water, smoke or another immediate hazard, move away and alert the operator; get emergency help when necessary.

The dryer keeps leaving clothes wet

Check the permitted load, selected setting and whether the clothes were properly spun first. If those are correct and drying remains abnormal, stop buying repeated extensions and ask the operator to check the machine. Dexter's official troubleshooting guide identifies airflow, lint and other equipment faults as possible causes of slow drying. Those are maintenance checks, not repairs a customer should attempt.

An item is damaged, or you need a refund

Keep the receipt, photos of the item and care label, machine number, selected course and relevant shop notices. Describe what happened promptly and ask the operator to investigate and explain the refund or claim process. Do not assume every failed cycle is automatically refunded or every damaged garment will be replaced. Keep the item as evidence instead of immediately discarding it or treating the damage.

Finish without leaving a problem for the next person

Return before your cycle ends, remove your laundry promptly and check the drum and door seal for small items. Use a clean folding surface and keep dirty bags off it. If someone else's finished laundry is blocking a machine, follow the posted policy or ask the operator; do not put it on the floor. Check that you have all your belongings and leave carts and surfaces ready for the next customer.
