Can You Bring a Pet on KTX? Carrier, Weight, and Vaccination Checks

KORAIL allows specified small pets in a separate carrier when its conditions are met. Before booking a KTX journey, check the animal, its weight, the carrier dimensions, and vaccination requirements. A pet-friendly hotel booking does not establish that your animal can board the train.

Official KORAIL guidance checked: October 25, 2026. The linked operational page does not display a separate publication or effective date. Confirm an unclear case with KORAIL before paying for travel.

Check the animal and carrier against the official wording

The official KORAIL baggage and pet guidance lists dogs, cats, and birds weighing less than 10 kg, in a separate carrying container. It gives the carrier’s aggregate length as 100 cm, with dimensions of 45 × 30 × 25 cm, and says pets must be vaccinated. It excludes wild animals and birds of prey that cause fear or discomfort.

Read “less than” literally rather than rounding an animal at the limit down. The English wording does not explicitly settle whether the weight includes the carrier. If that distinction affects eligibility, give KORAIL both weights and ask for a clear answer. Do the same if your carrier has a different shape or protruding wheels.

Measure the carrier you will actually use, including parts that affect its exterior size. Write down all three dimensions and the animal’s weight. A product described by a shop as “airline approved” or “travel size” does not answer a railway’s requirements.

Prepare a specific question if anything is unclear

Have these details ready when contacting the railway:

  • Animal species and current weight.
  • Carrier dimensions and empty weight.
  • Train type, route, and travel date.
  • Whether the animal can remain securely inside for the journey.
  • The vaccination record available to you.

The checked English page states the vaccination requirement but does not specify which document to present or how a foreign-language record is handled. Ask what evidence is needed for your case and carry the record the railway requests.

Do not guess the pet’s ticket or seat arrangement

The same official guide says carry-on luggage must not occupy a seat or block an aisle. It does not explain a pet fare, permission to buy an extra seat for a carrier, or an assistance-animal exception. Ask the railway which arrangement applies instead of buying a seat and treating that purchase as authorisation.

Tell KORAIL whether you need carrier storage or accessibility assistance, and keep any arrangement with your booking information.

Make the journey workable for the animal

Try the carrier at home before travelling. Check that the fastening remains secure when you lift it and that you can carry it safely with your other bags. Pack cleaning supplies and any items your animal normally needs without making the carrier harder to handle.

Choose a journey you can manage from door to door. Check the rules for the bus, taxi, or accommodation on each side separately. Leave enough time to reach the correct station without rushing with an animal and luggage.

If the animal, carrier, or required documentation does not qualify, change the transport plan before the travel day. For an ordinary KTX route after those conditions are resolved, use the Seoul–Busan KTX planning guide. The pet decision should come before committing to the wider itinerary.
