You can call a taxi in Korea without a Korean phone plan or Korean credit card, but the easiest app depends on what you already have.
Kakao T can work with a Kakao account made using your home mobile number, and some taxi requests allow you to choose Pay to the driver instead of registering a Korean payment method. If you do not already use KakaoTalk, k.ride is usually the simpler first choice: it was built by Kakao Mobility for international travelers and accepts overseas cards.
This guide explains both routes, the payment screen to look for, and the curbside details that prevent most pickup failures.
- You already use KakaoTalk: try Kakao T with the same account and choose Pay to the driver when the option appears.
- You have no Kakao account and want to use an overseas card: start with k.ride.
- You already use Uber: Uber Taxi is a reasonable backup in Korea, although availability varies by place and time.
- You only have portable Wi-Fi: install and verify your app before leaving home, because receiving an SMS may be difficult after arrival.

The Korea Tourism Organization currently lists all three as options and describes Kakao T and k.ride in its ride-hailing guide. Kakao Mobility's own k.ride site confirms overseas card payment, multilingual destination search, and translated driver chat.
Before arriving in Korea
- Decide on your main app and one backup. Do not wait until midnight outside a station to create an account.
- Keep your home SIM able to receive SMS. Data can come from an eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi, but verification may still arrive at your normal number.
- Save your hotel name and address in Korean. Copy it from the hotel's official page or booking confirmation, not from an automatic translation.
- Add a payment method before the trip. If the app rejects it, you still have time to contact the issuer or choose another app.
- Carry a physical card and some cash. They are useful backups if a taxi terminal or app payment fails.
How to request a regular taxi in Kakao T
- Make or sign in to a Kakao account. The Tourism Organization says a visitor can use a home mobile number when creating a KakaoTalk account.
- Open Kakao T and select the taxi service.
- Check the pickup pin. Move it to the correct entrance and the correct side of a divided road.
- Search for the destination. A Korean address or Korean place name usually gives the clearest match.
- Choose a standard or regular taxi when you do not need a premium vehicle.
- On the payment screen, look for Pay to the driver or 현장결제. The wording and position may change with the app version, and it may not appear for every vehicle type.
- Review any call fee and the estimated fare before confirming.
- After a driver accepts, match the plate number and vehicle details before opening the door.
If Kakao T requires a payment method you cannot register and no direct-payment option appears, do not keep forcing the same screen. Switch to k.ride or your backup app.
How k.ride is different
k.ride uses Kakao Mobility's taxi network but removes several account and payment barriers for international visitors. You enter a phone number for verification and can then use Google, Apple, or email login. An overseas-issued credit or debit card can be registered for automatic payment.
- Install k.ride and complete phone verification.
- Choose Google, Apple, or email login when offered.
- Register your overseas card before requesting the first taxi.
- Set the pickup pin and destination, then review the estimated fare and vehicle type.
- Use the translated in-app chat if the driver needs a landmark or entrance name.
The app interface is available in English, Japanese, and Chinese, while destination search and driver chat support many more languages. These features are why k.ride is usually my first recommendation for a short-term visitor starting from zero.
The pickup pin matters more than the app
A correct reservation can still fail when the pin is on the wrong side of the street or inside a building complex. Before confirming:
- Move to a legal curb where a car can stop without blocking traffic.
- Use a hotel entrance, convenience store, or named gate as the pickup point.
- Avoid placing the pin in a bus-only lane, underground road, or opposite carriageway.
- At Seoul Station, large malls, airports, and hospitals, check the numbered gate or taxi stand.
- If the driver messages you, send the entrance name rather than a long explanation.
Paying inside the taxi
If you chose direct payment in Kakao T, pay the amount shown on the taxi meter or terminal at the end of the trip. The Tourism Organization says cash, credit card, and Tmoney can be used for direct payment. A foreign physical card may still fail because of its issuer or network settings, so carry a second card or cash.

Common problems and the fastest fix
No verification SMS
Check the country code, remove a leading zero when your country's format requires it, and confirm that your carrier allows international SMS. If you are already in Korea with only a data-only eSIM, reconnect your home SIM long enough to receive the code. Do not repeatedly request codes in a short period.
Foreign card rejected
Confirm that overseas and online transactions are enabled. If Kakao T rejects in-app registration, use direct payment when available or move to k.ride. If k.ride rejects the card, try a second card rather than relying on one issuer.
No driver accepts
Late Friday nights, rain, holidays, and short trips can reduce availability. Move to a simpler pickup point, confirm that your destination is correct, and compare the backup app. Do not stand in the roadway trying to flag a booked taxi.
The driver cannot find you
Send a landmark or entrance name through in-app chat. If the taxi is across a divided road, do not run through traffic; message the driver or cancel and place the pin correctly.
Safety and help numbers
- Match the plate number, vehicle, and driver details shown in the app.
- Keep the booking screen until the trip ends.
- If the arriving vehicle details do not match, do not board.
- Use 112 for police and 119 for fire or medical emergencies.
- For non-emergency travel information or interpretation, contact the Korea Travel Helpline at 1330.
